Tébessa (Arabic: تبسة) (population: 170,000) is the capital city of Tébessa Province, Algeria, 20 km east from the border with Tunisia. Tebessa was an outpost of Carthage in the 7th century BC, in 146 AC it became part of the Roman Empire and was known as Theveste, in the 7th century AC, after the Arab invasion of the region, Theveste lost its importance, later, Ottomans established a small military garrison there in 16th century. Tebessa the capital of the agricultural province of Tebessa, nearby there is also a phosphate mine. The city is famous for the traditional Algerian carpets in the region. Tebessa is connected by road and rail with the other parts of Algeria, and by road with Tunisia. There is also an airport.
