The hostel occupies a converted Water Mill at the head of Bransdale; an unspoiled and hidden valley in the North York Moors. Accommodation is comfortable, but basic. It is an ideal base from which to get away from it all and to enjoy peace and tranquility in beautiful countryside. There are many fine walks in the surrounding area, which is rich in wildlife.
The nearest towns are Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley, both 10 miles away, and the North Yorkshire coast can be reached within an hour. The ‘local’ pubs are 8 miles away, both of which serve food. Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; ‘Heartbeat Country’; National Trust properties at Nunnington, Rievaulx, Bridestones and the Yorkshire Coast; Pickering and Helmsley Castles and Duncombe Park. The surrounding farmland is owned by the National Trust and let to tenant farmers; please respect the working life of the Dale during your visit.
From Helmsley Take the Scarborough road out of Helmsley (A170), 800 yards from the roundabout in the centre of Helmsley turn left opposite a petrol station, signposted Carlton. Travel 10 miles to the head of Bransdale, passing through two gates as you approach the head of the Dale. Turn right at the T-junction (the Church is signposted to the left). Go over the bridge, then up the hill, round a right bend and at the next bend to the left there is a large gate on the right hand side with a ‘Basecamp’ sign on it. Go through the gate and follow the track down to the Mill. Please close all gates behind you.
From Kirkbymoorside Drive through the town centre and at the top of the Market Place turn left at the mini-roundabout. After about 1½ miles take the left fork to Fadmoor. Continue along this road for about 9 miles. Just before the head of Bransdale you will see a large gate on the left hand side with a ‘Basecamp’ sign on it. Go through the gate and follow the track down to the Mill. Please close all gates behind you.
