Aalen lies 430 m above sea level, at the end of the Kocher valley on the northern edge of the Swabian Mountains. The town was founded by Staufer Kings between 1241 and 1246 on the ground of a Roman fort whose remains can still be seen today. Their history is reflected in numerous monuments and museums.
The lovely scenery of the eastern part of the Swabian Mountains is ideal for various sports activities and interesting biological and geological excursions. The youth hostel is situated at the western edge of town.
