Bandung, is the capital of the province of West Java, Indonesia and is the country's third largest city. Bandung, the capital of West Java province, is located about 180 km (112 miles) southeast Jakarta. The topology of the city is a river basin at the elevation of 768 metres (2,520 feet) above sea level surrounded by mountains of which some are active volcanoes. The northern part of the city is more mountainous than the rest of the city with one prominent Tangkuban Perahu volcano with its distinguished truncated flat peak. Long-term volcanic activities have created a fertile andisol soil in the north, suitable for intensive rice, fruit, tea, tobacco and coffee plantations. In the south and east, alluvial soils from sediments deposited by the Cikapundung river are mostly found. The river runs through Bandung, north to south and merges into the larger Citarum river in Karawang.
