Athlone stands close to the geographical centre of Ireland, on the borders of two counties and provinces. Although the river forms the historic border between County Roscommon and County Westmeath, the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in Westmeath.
The town's urban population in 1993 was 23,321 (including rural area).
