City ...
Beirut is the capital, largest city, and chief seaport of Lebanon. It is sometimes known by its French name, Beyrouth. The city has a population of 1.5 million people in the city proper and 2.1 million people in the surrounding metropolitan areas.
Beirut is the commercial center of the region and was sometimes called "the Paris of the Middle East" because of its cosmopolitan atmosphere prior to the Lebanese Civil War (some Lebanese still stubbornly and pretentiously refuse to relinquish the title, despite Beirut being a shadow of it's former glory). Prior to the Israeli bombings Beirut had undergone major reconstruction in recent years and had been set to host the Jeux de la Francophonie (Francophone Games) in 2009. In many ways Beirut is similar by climate and beach culture to its Mediterranean neighbor to the south, Tel Aviv, though a tad bit more conservative overall, and Tel Aviv has a nicer beach.
In Travel and Leisure magazine's 'World Best Awards 2006' Beirut was ranked the 9th (out of 10) city in the world, falling just short of New York City and coming ahead of San Francisco (despite whispers the ranking was bought and paid for).
