Islesburgh House was built in 1907 for Andrew Smith, owner of one of the largest companies to profit from the herring boom. After being in use for many years as a youth hostel and meeting place the building has been beautifully restored and refurbished. Between April and September it operates as Lerwick Youth Hostel offering superb quality visitor accommodation at budget price.
Two floors are fully accessible for disabled users and the hostel offers two or four person bedroom accommodation, or group dormitories. The fully equipped hostel has 64 bed spaces and is central to all amenities. The hostel has one of the few 5-star gradings given by the Scottish Tourist Board.
Islesburgh House is conveniently close to most amenities and services, and the extensive schedule of transport services make Lerwick Youth Hostel an ideal base from which to explore the rest of Shetland.
A very well equipped kitchen is available for hostelers self catering, while the House Cafe is a popular eating place for tourists and local residents. Wholefoods and healthier options are served in our relaxing cafe which enjoys special views of Lerwick's flower parks, tennis court and bowling green.
