Bohinj (German Wochein) is an alpine valley and a municipality in the north-west of Slovenia, in the Julian Alps. It is recognisable by its periglacial lake, Lake Bohinj (Slovenian Bohinjsko jezero, German Wocheinersee). Some 20km long and 5km wide, Bohinj is the name given to the entire Sava Bohinjka basin southwest of Bled.
Bohinj began opening up for tourists years ago. Many people, however, are also drawn to it for its peace, quiet and fresh air. Bohinj has become a starting point for tourists for day trips, for walks on the trails that run throughout the valley, and for mountaineering and climbing tours and offers ideal options and opportunities for rest and relaxation in all seasons. In winter the valley becomes a winter sports centre for Skiers, snowboarders, ice climbers and those wishing to go ice skating on Lake Bohinj. During the summer, Lake Bohinj is frequented with people wanting to go for a swim, and with the Sava Bohinjka River, kayakers and fishermen as well. Biking, trekking and climbing, are also typical tourist activities in the area.
