Snuffel Youth Hostel

Snuffel lives on Ezelstraat, a pedestrian-friendly lane in the northwest corner of Bruges' historic center. You're far enough from the Markt that you sleep without canal-cruise announcements, but close enough that the Belfry is eight minutes on foot. 't Brugs Beertje — the city's 300-beer temple — is literally around the corner.

The building is a Flemish townhouse retrofitted into a hostel by people who understand what backpackers want: a functioning downstairs bar (Belgian beer, not watered-down lager), a garden terrace that doubles as the smoking area, a proper shared kitchen with two hobs and enough counter space to cook, and dorms that are plain but clean. Beds are steel-framed bunks, not the hotel-grade curtained kind, but mattresses are firm and the lockers are the big kind that fit a 60L pack.

The social engine is the bar. Management runs a live-music night most Fridays (acoustic duo, open mic, occasional stand-up) and the garden fills up with a mix of hostel guests, neighborhood locals stopping by for a quick Westmalle, and cycling tourists in Lycra. Staff organizes walking tours to Damme most Saturdays, and the tour desk books De Halve Maan brewery visits (ask ahead — they sell out in summer).

The trade-off: this is not a party hostel. The bar closes at midnight, the dorms are not soundproofed against neighboring rooms, and if you want to rage until 4am you need to leave the building. That's fine — it's what makes Snuffel the sensible pick for travelers in Bruges for a day or two, and why it's stayed 8.7-rated for years.
