§ 01 — Summary

KaBa Hostel sits in the medieval core of Ghent, a 5-minute walk from Vrijdagmarkt and Sint-Bavo Cathedral, with a private garden and terrace at the back. Mixed dorms have lockers and a shared kitchen with full appliances; private doubles add a TV and private bathroom. Continental breakfast buffet is available downstairs and the location score is 8.8/10.

§ 02 — The full story

KaBa Hostel is the practical, slightly-introverted choice in central Ghent. It's tucked into a residential street off Vrijdagmarkt, the 13th-century market square that Gentenaars actually drink in (the Dulle Griet pub on the corner is the one that takes your shoe as deposit for a Kwak), and yet the building itself is set back enough that you don't hear the late-night noise inside the dorms.

The ground floor has a substantial shared kitchen — proper oven, dishwasher, fridge, and a coffee machine that actually works — which matters in Ghent because a 0.50€ supermarket beer beats a 5€ café terrace one almost every time. There's a long picnic-table garden out the back, sheltered enough to be usable from April to October, and Belgians staying here tend to colonise it from late afternoon. The lounge has a small board-games shelf and a real coffee bar on site.

What to know going in: this isn't a party hostel. There's no bar serving cocktails, no DJ, no organised pub crawls. The vibe is mid-thirties solo travellers, couples, and Belgian weekenders, which suits the actual demographic of people who pick Ghent over Bruges. Reception is genuinely warm and helpful (the most consistent praise in 1700+ reviews), but you make your own evening here.

Who it's for: budget-conscious travellers who cook, couples who want a private double in the centre for €60-80, and solo travellers who'd rather meet four people in a kitchen than thirty in a bar. Who it's not for: anyone whose primary reason for visiting Ghent is to drink shots on Overpoort — pick something closer to the student strip.

Kitchen area and breakfast were very clean, tidy and affordable. The private room for two was tight, but the bathroom was clean and relatively new. Reception staff were extremely helpful and available at every hour we asked.

Clean, quiet, very good breakfast, and a 15-minute walk to the centre. Hard to find that combination this close to Vrijdagmarkt at this price point.

Super friendly receptionist and very easy check-in and check-out. Clean and spacious common area. The women's dorm was clean and comfortable — I booked specifically for that and was not disappointed.
