Leuven Board Games & Game RoomRanked guide

Best Hostels with Board Games in Leuven

Leuven is a 100k-resident university city where 25k KU Leuven students fill the cafes from September to June. Outside semester it's calmer, and rainy Belgian nights are real: 14 days a month with rain, on average. Both hostels in this guide have stocked board game shelves, and one has a dedicated game room. If you're staying overnight in Leuven, especially in winter, board games are how the social scene starts before you head to Oude Markt or, on quieter weeks, replace it entirely.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I came to Leuven for one night as a Brussels stopover and ended up staying three because the hostel common room had a working fireplace and a shelf of board games, and a Belgian student showed up with a six-pack of Westmalle and a copy of Carcassonne. We were six strangers by 9pm and headed to Oude Markt at 11. The whole point of staying in Leuven instead of Brussels is that the scale is human: hostel common rooms become dinner-party rooms, and a board game game is what gets the conversation started.

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Board Games & Game Room in Leuven

Tip Nº 01

Both hostels have board games but only Blauwput has a dedicated game room with seating for groups. City Hostel keeps games in the common-area lounge, which is cosier in winter but smaller.

Tip Nº 02

Bring beers from Albert (5-min walk from City Hostel, 8-min from Blauwput) for cheaper-than-bar prices: Westmalle Tripel is around 2.50 EUR a bottle at retail, 6 at the bar.

Tip Nº 03

Friday and Saturday during semester, board games at the hostel happen 6-10pm, then everyone goes to Oude Markt. Outside semester, board games run later and Oude Markt is half-quiet.

Tip Nº 04

Leuven is a bike-theft hotspot: don't leave board games or anything else in unlocked common rooms overnight. Lockers cost nothing at both hostels.

Tip Nº 05

Both hostels have basic games (Catan, Risk, Carcassonne, Cards Against Humanity). Bring something specific if you have a favourite: there are no Leuven shops that sell English-language board games.
