Looming Hostel
Wooden Karlova house, rooms decorated by local artists, hammock terrace and a real shared kitchen — Tartu's social-and-creative hostel by 969 reviews
Looming Hostel is Tartu's eco-and-art-led pick — a renovated 19th-century wooden house in the Karlova neighborhood with rooms decorated by local artists, a back terrace strung with hammocks, and the only proper shared kitchen with a coffee machine that any Tartu hostel offers. 969 reviews and an 8.4 rating make it the most-tested social hostel in town.
Looming is the only Tartu hostel that genuinely feels like a hostel. The building is a 19th-century wooden Karlova house at Kastani 38, renovated with hypoallergenic finishes, recycled-material furniture, and guestrooms each decorated by a different local artist. The terrace at the back has hammocks, a sun deck, and the kind of slow-afternoon scene you don't find at any of the other three Tartu hostels.
Karlova is the right neighborhood for a backpacker weekend. Café Truffe is a 4-minute walk; the brunch culture along Tähe street is genuinely good. The Aparaaditehas creative quarter — old factory turned bars, galleries, weekend market — is a 7-minute walk. The Town Hall Square is 15 minutes on foot through Supilinn (the wooden Soup Town district), which is itself one of the genuine reasons to visit Tartu.
The shared kitchen is the best in the city — proper stove, fridge, full kitchenware, dining table, coffee machine that's always on. Solo travelers and couples cook here regularly. Reviewers from Czechia, Austria, Latvia, and Estonia consistently praise the warm atmosphere, the friendly staff, the books and board games in the common room. Brad from the UAE in April 2026 left a 10/10 review specifically about the kitchen letting him eat a full breakfast before his early business meeting.
Downsides: the upper floors are accessible by stairs only (no elevator — the building is heritage-protected). The shower water pressure is inconsistent — Martin in April 2026 left a polite note about it. Public street parking only; if you've driven into Tartu, factor that in. Pet-friendly, which you'll either love or want to know upfront.
