Tampere is Finland's third-largest city — the sauna capital of the world, sitting on the isthmus between two huge lakes connected by the Tammerkoski rapids that splits the centre in two. Two real hostels in town: Dream Hostel in the Tulli district (8.5, 2,147 reviews — the social anchor with 24-hour reception and €10 continental breakfast), and Hostel Teopolis on Sairaalankatu (8.6, 465 reviews — the quieter pick with soundproofed dorms and in-room fridges). Plus the Plevna brewery in the Finlayson cotton-mill complex, the Pyynikki wooden tower with its cult munkki donut cafe, and free-entry public saunas at Rauhaniemi where lake plunges happen year-round.
