§ 01 — Summary

JOST Saint-Roch is the chain's Montpellier flagship — 8.4 across 2,475 reviews. Capsule-style dorm beds with curtains and reading lights, a rooftop pool (€10 day pass), a proper bar with live music and karaoke, an on-site restaurant serving lunch and dinner, and one of the better breakfast spreads in any French hostel. Three minutes' walk from Montpellier Saint-Roch train station.

§ 02 — The full story

JOST opened the Montpellier branch in 2023 in a renovated office block on Rue Isabelle Eberhardt, three minutes north of the Saint-Roch station. The location is the strategic part — you walk off the TGV from Paris (3h15) or the regional train from Sète and you're checking in before you've finished your coffee. The Place de la Comédie is a 7-minute walk through the southern edge of the Écusson, past the wine bars on Rue de l'Aiguillerie.

The building has 12 floors. The capsule-style beds are the design feature reviewers consistently call out — every bunk has a privacy curtain, a reading light, a personal locker, and a power socket near the pillow. Six-bed mixed dorms are the workhorse; there are also four-bed female dorms (JOST LADIES) with extra security, and proper double private rooms with en-suite bathrooms on the upper floors.

The ground floor is the social engine. There's a restaurant serving French cuisine for lunch and dinner (around €14 for a plat du jour, €25 for the full evening menu), a bar that runs happy hour from 18:00 to 20:00, and a small stage for the weekly live music nights (Thursday usually) and karaoke (Friday). The breakfast is the surprise — continental, vegan options, fresh pastries, kid-friendly buffet, around €9 if booked in your rate, €12 walk-in. Reviewers from Austria and the Netherlands consistently call it 'better than most boutique hotels'.

The rooftop pool is small and shared with paying day guests (€10 — the hostel charges this on top of the room). Open May to mid-October, sundowner views over the rooftops of the Écusson and the towers of Antigone. There's a sun deck with loungers and a pool bar, and they enforce the 22:00 quiet rule strictly so it does not become a party venue at night.

Who this is for: solo travellers and couples who want one roof for the bed, the bar, the dinner, and the swim — and who find the price of €28 a night for a capsule bed in central Montpellier fair given what's included. Skip if you're allergic to chain hostels or want zero noise — the bar runs to midnight, and weekend karaoke can be heard from the lower-floor dorms. Domestic French travellers from Paris and Lyon make up about 30% of the guest mix; the rest is the standard European backpacker spread plus a healthy Spanish contingent on the Barcelona TGV route.

Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of options — different breads and spreads, cereals, pancakes, croissants, yogurts. You get a lot for this price.
