The People - Paris Bercy
Design-led dorms five minutes from Gare de Lyon, with a rooftop bar that actually has a view
The People Bercy sits at 28 Boulevard de Reuilly in the 12th, a five-minute walk from Gare de Lyon for anyone onward-bound to Lyon, Marseille or Italy. It's the best-rated link in The People's four-hostel Paris chain: spacious family and dorm rooms with private bathrooms, a rooftop terrace that genuinely overlooks the city, and a Boulevard de Reuilly café scene you can walk into for dinner.
The People Bercy is the 12th arrondissement flagship of The People Hostels, a chain that's quietly become the smartest budget bet in central Paris. Opened in 2020 on a quiet stretch of Boulevard de Reuilly, the building has hotel bones — ensuite bathrooms in every room (yes, even dorms), full air conditioning, and work desks you can actually use.
The rooftop terrace is the headline feature, and it earns it. Open to guests and locals in the evenings, it serves cocktails and wines from a short but thoughtful list, with real views south toward the 13th and east over Bois de Vincennes. On warm evenings it runs live DJ sets and the crowd skews 25-to-35, a mix of travelers and local French twenty-somethings who treat it like their neighborhood bar. There's also a ground-floor café-restaurant, Le Mazette, that does a weekend brunch and full dinner service — useful because Boulevard de Reuilly otherwise runs quiet after 10pm.
Rooms are a cut above typical hostel fit-out: dorms come with individual reading lights, in-bed curtains, proper lockers, and USB charging ports at every bunk. Female-only dorms exist and are consistently reviewed as safe and clean. Private rooms look more like budget hotel rooms than hostel privates — a fair comparison given they're often under €90 for two.
Location-wise you're 10 minutes walk from both Gare de Lyon (TGV south and east) and Gare de Bercy (regional), and the Metro 8 at Reuilly-Diderot gets you to Bastille in four minutes and the Marais in eight. Bercy Village's restored wine-cellar shopping and dining arcade is a 12-minute walk southeast, and the Coulée Verte (the raised park Paris built before New York's High Line) starts in the neighborhood and runs all the way to Bastille.
