Jugendherberge Köln-Deutz is the second of Cologne's two official DJH hostels and the more central of the pair. The location is unusual but extremely practical — directly opposite Köln-Deutz Hauptbahnhof on Siegesstraße, on the east bank of the Rhine. ICE and Thalys trains stop at Deutz; the Lanxess Arena (Cologne's biggest indoor venue) is 10 minutes walk; the Koelnmesse (trade fair grounds) is just over the road; and the Hohenzollernbrücke walk to the Cathedral takes 15 minutes.
The building is a modern multi-storey hostel run on the standard DJH formula: clean, functional, predictable. Two dining rooms serve a hot breakfast buffet, with paid lunch and dinner options for groups (school groups and Karneval crowds book it for half-board stays). Every room has its own private bathroom — singles, twins, and dorms of 4 to 6 beds. Bed linen is included.
A small shop on-site sells snacks, drinks (including Kölsch in 0.5L bottles, an unusual sight in the home city of the 0.2L Stange), and basic essentials. Washing machines, dryers, and internet terminals are available — useful when you have arrived for a 4-day Messe stint with a single carry-on. There is no proper bar; the shop and the breakfast buffet are the social zones.
Deutz is a low-character district by Cologne standards — concrete, post-war, oriented around the trade fair and the arena. You stay here for transit, not for the Veedel feel. But the Hohenzollernbrücke crossing into Altstadt is a 7-minute walk that gives you the postcard view of the Cathedral in both directions.
