instantSleep Backpackerhostel St Pauli
Classic backpacker hostel on Max-Brauer-Allee with an in-house DJ room and pool tables
instantSleep is a veteran St. Pauli backpacker hostel on Max-Brauer-Allee 277, at the crossroads between Altona-Nord and St. Pauli. It's one of Hamburg's last properly social hostels — in-house Nightclub/DJ room, bar, pool table, sun deck, shared kitchen, and a female-only dorm option. Rooms are basic, the vibe is 2000s-backpacker-communal, and staff (ask for Smout) are a big part of why people come back.
InstantSleep Backpackerhostel has been quietly serving the St. Pauli backpacker scene since the early 2000s, when Hamburg's budget-travel world mostly meant DJH youth hostels and a handful of punk squats. The location is technically Altona-Nord (Max-Brauer-Allee 277), but you're 6 minutes from Reeperbahn station on foot and 8 minutes from Sternschanze — essentially the intersection of Hamburg's three best hostel-friendly neighborhoods.
The vibe is unapologetically old-school backpacker. Common lounge with pool table, board games, big shared dining table, sun deck and back terrace for summer. Downstairs there's a bar (Ratsherrn on tap, cocktails) and a small Nightclub/DJ room that runs guest DJs most Friday and Saturday nights — not a proper club, more of a hostel party room, which means everyone knows each other by the end. No cover charge for guests.
Rooms are basic to the point of spartan: shared dorms of 4-10 beds (a 4-bed female dorm option is consistently well-reviewed), private twins and doubles. Bathrooms are shared per floor, bring your own towel or rent one. The shared kitchen is fully kitted (stovetop, oven, kettle, fridge), and guests get cubby space for their own food with time-limit rules.
Free Wi-Fi, designated smoking area outside, daily housekeeping in public spaces, laundry room with self-service washer/dryer. No lift — stairs only. The bar handles evening snacks and coffee runs from 8am.
Crowd skews 20-to-30 solo backpackers, European Interrail kids, and occasional stag parties coming in from the UK for a Reeperbahn weekend. If the Reeperbahn vibe appeals and you want the hostel itself to be part of the party, this is your Hamburg pick. If you want quiet sleep after your night out, book elsewhere.
Max-Brauer-Allee is a main street, so Friday/Saturday nights have ambient traffic noise until about 2am. Earplugs recommended. Upside: two U-Bahn/S-Bahn interchanges within a 6-minute walk (Reeperbahn and Sternschanze), plus night buses run on Max-Brauer-Allee until dawn.
