Jugendherberge Hamburg Horner Rennbahn
Green-campus DJH hostel by the Horner Rennbahn race track, with BBQ, mini-golf and a tour desk
Jugendherberge Horner Rennbahn sits on Rennbahnstraße 100 next to the Horner Rennbahn horse-racing track, 20 minutes by U-Bahn east of Reeperbahn. It's a big green-campus DJH property — 400+ beds across several wings, kids' play area, mini-golf, BBQ, outdoor fireplace, restaurant, bar, full breakfast buffet and a tour desk selling Hamburg city tours. Parking included, wheelchair-accessible throughout. Best fit for families and groups.
Jugendherberge Hamburg Horner Rennbahn is the big family-and-groups DJH property in Hamburg, on the eastern edge of the city next to the namesake Rennbahn (horse-racing track, races sporadic, mostly used as an open park by locals). It's a 400-bed campus of connected low-rise buildings around a garden courtyard, with the kind of amenity list that reads like a summer-camp brochure — BBQ area, outdoor fireplace, mini-golf, pool table, ping-pong, picnic area, playground for kids, and a covered terrace for when Hamburg weather does what Hamburg weather does.
You give up location for all of this. You're 20 minutes on U3 (Horner Rennbahn station to Landungsbrücken for Reeperbahn) or 10 minutes to Hauptbahnhof. That's fine for a family trip where your priorities are sleep, breakfast and space, less fine if you want to stumble home from Große Freiheit at 3am. Night buses run until about 1am; after that, you're looking at a taxi.
The breakfast buffet is included in every rate and is a real DJH flex — hot items (scrambled eggs, sausages), cold cuts, cheeses, muesli, fresh bread, coffee, juice. Served 7-10h. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner (mid-range German, reasonable prices), and the bar with broadcast sports stays open evenings.
Dormitories skew 4-6 beds in the newer wings (renovated 2018-ish) and 6-8 beds in the older. The older wings have bathrooms down the hall; newer wings have ensuite. All rooms have lockers and lockable cupboards. Private family rooms sleep 2-6 and come with ensuite. Accessibility is genuinely strong — wheelchair-accessible bathrooms on every floor, lowered sinks, grab rails, raised toilets, entry ramps, lift.
The tour desk at 24-hour reception sells Reeperbahn bar crawls, Hamburg city walking tours, harbor tours, day trips to Lübeck, and HVV transit tickets. The staff genuinely know the city and will route you sensibly — solid if you're doing Hamburg in a weekend.
DJH membership is required (€7-22.50 annual, buy at reception). Parking is free on-site with ~80 spots, unusual for Hamburg. Electric-vehicle charging available.

“A traditional original hostel, part of the International association. Not one of those newly built ones, but clean and great at what it does. Fair prices.”
