Jugendherberge Stuttgart International
DJH classic on the Bopser hill — terrace view, clean dorms, 10 minutes to the Königstraße
Jugendherberge Stuttgart International is the official DJH youth hostel in Stuttgart-Mitte, perched on Haußmannstraße at the foot of the Bopser hill, 10 minutes' walk from the Hauptbahnhof and 2 minutes from Charlottenplatz U-Bahn. 8.2 rating from 2,087 reviewers, with a sun terrace looking over central Stuttgart, an in-house restaurant, and a bar serving Trollinger by the glass. Reliable, clean, family-friendly. Not a party hostel.
Jugendherberge Stuttgart International occupies a 1970s purpose-built hostel block on Haußmannstraße 27, halfway up the Bopser hill in the Bohnenviertel-adjacent eastern slope of Stuttgart-Mitte. From the entrance you can see the terrace cantilevered over the city — that view is the property's signature, especially at dusk when the Schlossplatz spires light up.
The layout is classic German DJH: 270+ beds across mixed dorms, female-only dorms, family rooms, and a handful of private singles and twins. Linen included, lockers in every room, breakfast buffet from 07:00 standard. The downstairs has a proper sit-down restaurant (open to non-guests too — surprisingly good Maultaschen and Linsen mit Spätzle), a separate bar with happy hour, and a basement game room with pool table, ping-pong, board games, and a battered foosball.
The walk from Hauptbahnhof is 10 minutes but it climbs about 50 metres of elevation — drag a wheeled suitcase up Eugensplatz once and you'll learn to take the U5 / U6 / U7 to Olgaeck or Charlottenplatz instead. From Charlottenplatz the hostel is a 5-minute uphill walk. The Stäffele staircases that connect Mitte to the upper neighborhoods start right outside.
Reality check: this is a DJH-run institution, not a backpacker bar-hostel. Lights-out vibes by 23:00, the bar closes around 22:30, and the average dorm-mate is a German school-trip kid or a budget family from Bavaria. Pick it for a clean bed near the centre, the terrace view, and the in-house restaurant; pick a private apartment if you came to Stuttgart to drink on Theodor-Heuss-Straße until 03:00. The Hauptbahnhof is 10 minutes away when you want to bail to Munich or the Black Forest in the morning.

“Very surprised, positively, what you can get for this money. Uncomparable. Staff were attentive, breakfast solid, and the terrace view at sunset was the highlight of my Stuttgart stop.”
“Very good location once you accept the hill. The Swabian dishes in the restaurant are the real find — Maultaschen-Suppe under €10 and they pour Trollinger by the glass.”
“Clean, safe, well-organised. Dorm a bit cramped with 6 bunks, and the school group on the floor below was loud at 22:00 sharp. Otherwise great value.”
