Our Honest Take

From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice

Flying Pig Uptown is the pick when you want the Flying Pig social engine without the Centrum noise machine. The location is genuinely premium: Vondelpark is your backyard, the Rijksmuseum is a 5-minute walk, and Leidseplein's bars are close enough for a night out but far enough to sleep after. The garden terrace is the best outdoor space of any Amsterdam hostel we've seen. That said, it's less intense socially than Downtown. If you're solo and need to meet people on night one, Downtown forces it. Uptown lets it happen organically. The en-suite dorms are worth the extra euros, and the kitchen saves serious money.

๐ŸŽฏ Insider Tips

  • 1Book an en-suite dorm if available. Shared bathrooms in a 100-year-old Dutch townhouse mean queues in the morning.
  • 2Vondelpark on a sunny afternoon is peak Amsterdam. Grab cheap snacks from Albert Heijn on Overtoom and join the locals on the grass.
  • 3Leidseplein is 5 minutes away for nightlife, but skip the tourist bars on the square. Walk one block to Lange Leidsedwarsstraat for better prices.
  • 4The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are both walkable, but book tickets online weeks in advance. Walk-up queues can be 2+ hours.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Why We Love It

1

Vondelpark location is unbeatable for culture, green space, and walkability without Centrum tourist density.

2

Garden terrace is a genuine oasis. Afternoon drinks here feel like a friend's backyard, not a hostel.

3

En-suite dorms at hostel prices. Rare for Amsterdam, especially in this neighborhood.

4

The shared kitchen actually works. Big enough, clean enough, and saves โ‚ฌ15+ per meal versus eating out.

5

Flying Pig heritage means the staff knows Amsterdam and the social calendar is consistently good.

๐Ÿ“– The Full Story

Flying Pig Uptown is the mellow sibling. Same family, same DNA, but swap the Red Light District chaos for Vondelpark trees and Rijksmuseum views. Vossiusstraat 46 sits at the edge of Oud Zuid, Amsterdam's museum quarter, which means you're walking distance from the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk, and Rijksmuseum without fighting through the tourist crush of Centrum.

The bar here is more lounge than party. Happy hour brings people together without the volume of Downtown, and the garden terrace is genuinely peaceful. Board games, the smoking lounge, and a shared kitchen that's actually usable round out the common spaces. Leidseplein nightlife is a 5-minute walk if you want noise, but the hostel itself doesn't generate it.

Some dorms have en-suite bathrooms, which is a significant upgrade over shared-bathroom hostels at this price point. The building is a classic Amsterdam townhouse: steep stairs, narrow corridors, and the kind of quirky decor that photographs well. Staff are Flying Pig trained, meaning they know Amsterdam inside out and run the same caliber of social events as the downtown location.

Flying Pig Uptown is the better pick for couples, light sleepers, and anyone who wants to explore Amsterdam's cultural side without sacrificing the social hostel experience. You still meet people here. You just also get to sleep.
