Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Generator Amsterdam is the chain hostel that works because it doesn't pretend to be anything else. The Oost location is a genuine advantage if you've already done the Centrum tourist circuit: Oosterpark is gorgeous, Dappermarkt has the cheapest food in the city, and Brouwerij 't IJ under the windmill is one of Amsterdam's best drinking experiences. The terrace bar facing the park is the standout social space, and the breakfast buffet saves you a trip to Albert Heijn. That said, it's a 500-bed operation with the personality to match. Staff are professional, not family. If you want a hostel where the owner remembers your name, this isn't it. If you want reliable dorms, a working bar, and a neighborhood that feels like real Amsterdam, Generator nails it.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Walk or bike to Brouwerij 't IJ (10 min). The craft beer is excellent, the windmill setting is iconic, and the tasting bar is free to enter. Way better than the Heineken Experience.
- 2Dappermarkt runs every day except Sunday. Fresh stroopwafels, cheap produce, and Surinamese food stands. A fraction of Albert Cuyp Market prices with zero tourists.
- 3The tram from the front door goes directly to Dam Square and Centraal Station. Buy a GVB day pass (โฌ9) if you're doing more than two rides.
- 4Private rooms here are genuinely hotel quality with en-suite bathrooms. If you're a couple, the price-per-person competes with mid-range hotels.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
Oost is where Amsterdam actually lives. Javastraat, Dappermarkt, and Oosterpark give you a side of the city the canal-ring tourists never see.
Terrace facing Oosterpark is the best outdoor hostel space in east Amsterdam. Sunset drinks with park views.
Generator's design standard means every room feels modern. Privacy curtains, USB outlets, solid mattresses.
Breakfast buffet is better than most chain hostels. Worth it on your first morning to fuel up before museums.
Families and couples are welcome. This isn't a party hostel that merely tolerates non-backpackers.
๐ The Full Story
Generator Amsterdam sits on Mauritskade in Oost, facing Oosterpark. It's not the most central location in Amsterdam, but the tram stop outside the door gets you to Centraal Station in 15 minutes, and Oost is arguably the most interesting neighborhood for anyone staying more than two nights. Dappermarkt (Amsterdam's cheapest street market) is a 5-minute walk, Javastraat has the best Indonesian food in the city, and Brouwerij 't IJ's windmill brewery is a 10-minute bike ride.
The building is pure Generator: industrial-chic, exposed concrete, designer furniture, and a lobby that looks more boutique hotel than hostel. The bar opens into a terrace that faces the park, and the events calendar runs live music, DJ sets, and themed nights through the week. Breakfast buffet is above average for a chain hostel.
Dorms are modern and well-maintained. Privacy curtains, reading lights, USB outlets, and lockers are standard. Private rooms are available and feel genuinely hotel-quality with en-suite bathrooms. The place is big (500+ beds) but the layout breaks it into sections that don't feel overwhelming.
Generator is a machine, not a boutique. You won't get the handmade charm of Flying Pig or the architectural wow of ClinkNOORD. What you get is consistency: clean rooms, reliable WiFi, a bar that works, and a location in the neighborhood locals actually live in. For families and couples who want hostel prices with hotel predictability, Generator delivers.
