Utrecht Hostels with On-Site Bars

Both of Utrecht's hostels have on-site bars, and they could not be more different. Strowis's bar is a converted ground-floor parlour in a 17th-century townhouse — beers from €3, opens around 17:00, run by hostel staff who actually live in the city, with the walled back garden as overflow seating in summer. Stayokay's bar is a corporate lobby setup that opens onto the Neude central square — slightly pricier, closes around midnight, decent for a beer with a German backpacker who arrived on the late train. Both work; the choice depends on whether you want hostel-bar character or hostel-bar reliability.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I drank at both hostel bars across a four-night Utrecht trip. Strowis bar night one was the conversational hit — I bought a €3 Trappist, sat at the picnic table in the garden, and within ten minutes was three deep with a Slovenian solo backpacker, a Dutch couple back from Amsterdam, and the bartender (who turned out to be a former resident from 2019). The bar shut at 23:30 and we migrated across the street to ACU for €4 beers and DJ Sebastian's 90s house set until 02:00. Stayokay bar night three was the opposite vibe — I sat at the corner of the lobby bar with a craft IPA at 21:30, ended up in a 90-minute talk with a Turkish solo traveller about train routes through Germany, then went up to bed at 23:00. Both bars worked exactly as advertised: Strowis for the long night out, Stayokay for the manageable nightcap.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Bar in Utrecht

Tip Nº 01

Strowis's bar opens around 17:00 — show up before 19:00 in summer for a picnic-table seat in the garden, after which the regulars take them and you'll be inside.

Tip Nº 02

ACU across the street from Strowis is the natural extension of a Strowis-bar night. Doors open 22:00 Friday and Saturday, €5 cover most nights, beers €3 to €4. The DJ sets are house, techno or weird Dutch indie depending on the night.

Tip Nº 03

The Werven cellar bars on the Oudegracht (Café België, Olivier) are 4 minutes' walk south from Strowis and 3 minutes south from Stayokay — order a Trappist or a Lambic, sit on the stone steps at water level, watch the boats. Best done before 21:00 for a seat.

Tip Nº 04

Stayokay's bar prices are a couple of euros above Strowis — pay the difference if you specifically want corporate-clean and reliable, save it if you want character.

Tip Nº 05

Brown café (traditional Dutch pub) detour: Café Ledig Erf is 8 minutes' walk south from either hostel, candle-lit, quiet, jenever (Dutch gin) from €3.50 a glass — the slowest, most local way to drink in Utrecht.
