Best Bergen Hostels with On-Site Bars

Bergen is not a party city. Bars close at 02:00–03:00 on weekends, most on weekdays at 00:30, and the cost of a pint at a regular Bryggen bar (NOK 130, about €11) makes a night out disappear fast. The hostels that serve their own beer undercut the city by NOK 30–40 per pint and save you the rain-walk back. All three Bergen hostels below have an on-site bar or bar-corner: Montana's terrace has the best view, City Hostel Bergen has the best price and community, Fabryka has the most basic but cheapest setup. Pick based on what a Bergen evening is worth to you.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
Montana's terrace at sunset with the Byfjord below is the best hostel-bar experience I've had in Scandinavia. NOK 95 for a local pint (Hansa or Nøgne Ø), fire lit on the covered terrace in October, travelers from 12 countries at three connected tables comparing hikes. It is not a loud bar — conversations happen, DJs don't. City Hostel Bergen's bar is the inside-mellow version: a small counter in the main common room, same NOK 95 pints, quieter earlier in the evening but staying social until 23:00 when house rules call last. Fabryka's is a small bar corner rather than a full bar — limited beers, mostly used by guests grabbing one before heading out to Biskopen or Apollon three minutes away.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Bar in Bergen

Tip Nº 01

Montana's terrace is the best hostel sunset in Norway — arrive by 19:30 in summer (the sun is still up until 22:30 in June) to get a table on the fjord side. In October–April book dinner at 18:00 to catch the 16:00 sunset with the chalet fireplace already lit indoors.

Tip Nº 02

City Hostel Bergen's bar closes at 23:00 sharp (quiet hours), so start the night there at 20:00 if you want two full pints before last call. For later drinking walk three minutes to Apollon Platebar (open until 01:00) or No Stress (02:00 on weekends).

Tip Nº 03

All three hostel bars accept Vipps (Norwegian payment app) plus card — no cash. If you're paying a group tab, Vipps split is instant; cards work but are slower. Download Vipps before arriving in Norway if you're planning any nights out.

Tip Nº 04

Hansa is the Bergen-brewed beer (locals drink it at the hostel bars and won't be disappointed to see it), while Nøgne Ø is Grimstad's most famous craft (South Norway, well-stocked at Montana). Both are NOK 30–40 cheaper at hostel bars than at Bryggen tourist bars.

Tip Nº 05

For a proper Bergen beer night: 19:00 Montana terrace (Hansa, fjord view), 21:00 Biskopen craft beer (9 taps, NOK 110 pints), 23:00 Apollon Platebar (cheap whiskey and vinyl). Total NOK 400 for 4 drinks versus NOK 650 at Bryggen equivalents.
