Retro Hostel occupies a 19th-century townhouse at Potaissa 11-13, on the cobblestoned pedestrian-only spine that runs along the inside of Cluj's medieval city wall. From the gate you turn left and you're at Piața Unirii in 5 minutes; turn right and you're at the Tailors' Bastion (Bastionul Croitorilor) in 2.
The hostel sleeps roughly 50 across 4-, 6- and 8-bed mixed dorms plus two female-only rooms and a couple of private doubles. Bunks are sturdy wood-frame with reading lights and individual lockers (bring your own padlock or buy one at reception for €2). The cellar level houses what staff call 'the dungeon' — a low-ceilinged stone-walled lounge that doubles as the social-evening venue — plus an actual sauna (5 lei extra, book at reception, 90-minute slots).
The ground-floor lounge has a guest kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave and a wall-mounted board listing every guest's open-pantry contributions. Reception runs 24-hour and gives you a marked-up Cluj map on arrival showing the Hashtag bar street, the Cetățuia Hill sunset trail, and the bus 5 connection to the airport. Free bicycles park in the inner courtyard — first-come, first-served, with helmets in a basket by the door.
Reviewer consensus across 535 Booking reviews (8.4 average): the location wins on every count, the staff are visibly proud of the place, and the 'concept is one of a kind' (the dungeon-and-sauna combo really is unusual). Common notes: the Saturday-night Hashtag bar noise carries up Potaissa after midnight, ask for a room facing the inner courtyard if you sleep light. The retro-themed décor lives up to the name in the lounge but less so in the dorms themselves — newer guests sometimes expect more vintage furniture in the bunks.
