Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Let's be honest: Generator is a machine, not a boutique experience. It's part of a huge chain, it processes hundreds of travelers per night, and the rooms are functional rather than charming. But here's why we still recommend it: the bar is an absolute weapon. With DJ nights, karaoke, live music, and an international crowd that's ALWAYS there (even on a random Tuesday in November), Generator guarantees a social scene in a way smaller hostels simply can't. It's also the cheapest quality option in central Barcelona at โฌ22/night. The Gracia location is the cherry on top. you're in Barcelona's coolest neighborhood with craft beer bars and indie shops on every corner. Just don't expect a cozy, intimate vibe. Generator is for people who want to go BIG and meet as many people as possible.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1The bar stays open until 2 AM on weekends. Pre-game here before hitting the clubs. you'll save a fortune on overpriced drinks in Ciutat Vella.
- 2Karaoke night is hilariously fun and the best social event they do. Don't be shy.
- 3Bring earplugs. Seriously. The dorms can get noisy and Generator doesn't pretend to be a quiet hostel.
- 4Explore Gracia neighborhood on foot. it's Barcelona's best-kept secret and it starts right outside the door.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
The bar is a proper nightlife venue. DJ nights, karaoke, live music. You don't even need to leave the hostel for a night out.
12,000+ reviews means a guaranteed international crowd every single night. Zero chance of a dead evening.
Gracia neighborhood is the real Barcelona. local bars, artisan shops, and plazas full of actual Barcelonians.
At โฌ22/night it's one of the cheapest quality hostels in the city. The Generator chain knows how to do budget right.
Walking tours organized by the hostel are a great way to orient yourself on day one.
๐ The Full Story
Generator is the big dog of Barcelona hostels. Part of the international Generator chain, this place is designed from the ground up for social travelers. The bar area is the centerpiece. it's a proper venue with DJ nights, karaoke sessions, live music, and a crowd that's always up for a good time.
The hostel sits in the Gracia district, which is arguably Barcelona's coolest neighborhood. Think local craft beer bars, indie vinyl shops, and plazas where locals actually hang out. You're also just 500m from Passeig de Gracia, so the Gaudi buildings are right there.
With 12,000+ reviews, Generator has the volume to guarantee a social scene every night. Even on a random Tuesday, the bar will have people. That said, it's a big hostel. it can feel a bit factory-like compared to smaller spots. But if your priority is meeting as many people as possible and having a guaranteed party scene, Generator delivers consistently.
The rooms are standard Generator quality: clean, modern, and functional. Private rooms are available for those who want the social scene without sharing a dorm. The on-site restaurant serves decent food, and the coffee house is a solid spot for morning espressos.
