Lamia BBK is the only women-only hostel in Bilbao, a modern and exceptionally clean adults-only property on Calle Gordoniz in the residential Indautxu district. Backed by the BBK foundation (the Basque savings bank), it has a large shared kitchen, key-card secured entry, blackout blinds in every room and a quiet lounge. 20 minutes on foot from Casco Viejo or one metro stop from Indautxu station.
Lamia BBK Women Hostel is the only women-only accommodation in Bilbao and one of a handful in northern Spain. It's funded by the BBK Foundation (the philanthropic arm of the Basque savings bank Kutxabank), so the building is genuinely well-maintained — modern fittings throughout, individually keyed lockers, key-card entry to both the building and each floor, and full blackout blinds and lockable windows in every room.
It sits on Calle Gordoniz in Indautxu, the residential and Basque-speaking district south of the river. It's a quieter side of Bilbao than Casco Viejo — the txikiteo bar circuit on Calle Pozas and Café Iruña are 8 minutes on foot, the Indautxu metro station is 6 minutes, and from there it's two stops to Casco Viejo or San Mamés. Walking to the Old Town is 20-25 minutes along Gran Vía. Camino del Norte pilgrims arriving on foot from Markina or Gernika regularly stay here for the safety and the kitchen.
The shared kitchen is large, properly equipped (oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, induction hobs, full crockery) and rarely crowded. The lounge has work desks and free Wi-Fi that actually reaches both floors. Rooms are 4 to 6 beds with high-quality mattresses and reading lights — the consistent praise across reviews is cleanliness, safety and a calm, respectful atmosphere. The grocery shop two doors down sells everything you need.
Who it's for: solo female travellers prioritising safety and quiet, Camino del Norte pilgrims, and anyone who wants the practical reliability of a modern build over the chaos of a party hostel. Who it's not for: anyone wanting an instant social scene with men in the mix, or a base directly inside Casco Viejo.
