Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Astor Museum's location is its killer feature: literally opposite the British Museum, in the heart of Bloomsbury, surrounded by bookshops and garden squares. The Astor social programming (bar crawls, tours, dinners) adds energy without the forced fun of some party hostels. Staff are genuinely good. At ยฃ24/night it's competitive, and the kitchen saves you from Bloomsbury restaurant prices (which are steep). The building is older and the dorms are standard, but everything is clean and the beds are comfortable. Bike rental is underrated: cycling to Camden Market or along the Thames is faster and more scenic than the Tube. If you're in London for museums and culture, Astor Museum puts you at ground zero.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Enter the British Museum from the Montague Street entrance (back door). Shorter queue, same museum.
- 2Russell Square gardens are perfect for a cheap lunch. Grab a meal deal from the Tesco on Marchmont Street.
- 3Rent a bike and cycle to Camden Market (15 min) instead of taking the Tube. The Regent's Canal route is beautiful.
- 4King's Cross is a 15-minute walk. If you're catching the Eurostar, you don't need to take the Tube.

๐ The Full Story
Astor Museum sits on Montague Street, literally across the road from the British Museum's back entrance. Location doesn't get more specific than this: you can be staring at the Rosetta Stone within three minutes of leaving your dorm. The Bloomsbury neighborhood adds literary charm, with Russell Square gardens for cheap sandwiches and independent bookshops on every corner.
The Astor brand runs on social energy. Bar crawls through Soho, walking tours of central London, themed dinners in the communal kitchen, and a sun terrace that fills up during summer evenings. Staff are young, travel-minded, and consistently praised for friendliness. The building is old (this is Bloomsbury), but the facilities feel refreshed.
The shared kitchen saves serious money in one of London's more expensive dining areas. Bike rental is a bonus: London's cycle lanes have improved dramatically, and cycling from Bloomsbury to the South Bank is faster than the Tube. Laundry on-site means you can pack lighter.
Russell Square Tube (7 minutes) connects to the Piccadilly line (Heathrow direct). Tottenham Court Road (12 minutes) gives you Central and Northern lines. King's Cross St Pancras (15 minutes) connects to the Eurostar and every mainline train. Bloomsbury is quietly one of the best-connected areas in London.
