§ 01 — Summary

Montagu Hostel & Bar is the 8.7-rated adults-only social pick in Innsbruck: a Hötting townhouse with a sun terrace, a proper ground-floor bar with live music and DJ nights, a well-equipped shared kitchen, and rooms with parquet floors and private bathrooms. Four minutes across the Innbrücke to the Altstadt, and unlike every other hostel in town, this one has actual nightlife on-site.

§ 02 — The full story

Montagu Hostel & Bar sits on Höttinger Gasse, a quiet lane on the north bank of the Inn river in the Hötting district. You're across the Innbrücke from the Altstadt — literally a four-minute walk to the Goldenes Dachl, but far enough off the tourist track that the pavement isn't heaving in July. The building is a century-old Höttinger townhouse that's been gutted and redone with parquet floors, private bathrooms in every room, and proper storage for ski gear.

The ground floor is a working bar, and that's the whole character of the place. It runs as a proper neighborhood spot — the Wine/Champagne Bar section, the Coffee House by day, the cocktail menu from 18:00, Live Music/Performance nights, and a Nightclub/DJ setup that fires up Friday and Saturday. Adults-only: kids aren't on the floorplan, and the noise profile is built around that. Non-guests come in off the street to drink, which is exactly why the social scene here beats the rest of Innsbruck's hostels.

The sun deck and terrace on the upper floor give you the Nordkette ridgeline view without leaving the building. Breakfast is served there on clear mornings, cocktail hour there when the light hits the mountain. There's a proper shared kitchen (two hobs, oven, full fridge) for cooking your own, and a common lounge with board games, darts, and evening entertainment.

Rooms are dorms (4, 6, 8 beds) and privates. Every room has its own private bathroom — unusual in a hostel at this price. Beds are steel-framed with privacy curtains, lockers fit a 60L pack, and the parquet floors + thick walls mean the bar noise doesn't reach the rooms. Free WiFi, free luggage storage at reception, tour desk for Stubai Glacier + Axamer Lizum day trips, and the airport is a 1.9 mi taxi ride (or bus F to Hauptbahnhof then 20 min).

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01Ground-floor bar with real programming: Live Music, Nightclub/DJ, cocktail menu from 18:00 — the one hostel in Innsbruck with actual built-in social life
  • 02Every room has its own private bathroom, rare at this €38 price point and a huge upgrade on the usual shared-corridor setup
  • 03Sun deck and terrace overlooking the Nordkette — breakfast with the ridgeline, cocktail hour with alpenglow, no extra walk needed
  • 04Hötting location is 4 min across the Innbrücke from the Altstadt but a world quieter than staying directly off Maria-Theresien-Straße
  • 05Adults-only means the noise profile matches the bar, not a tip-toe family dorm

§ 06 — What travelers say

I really liked the setup of the beds — stairs make it easy to reach the upper bunk and the curtains give you real privacy. The bar downstairs was great for meeting other travellers, and staff helped us pick the right day for the Nordkette.

Dorms don't feel cramped at all and there's enough space for your stuff. The vibe is lovely with the bar and terrace, and rooms are clean. Location is perfect: 4 minutes to the Old Town.

Clean showers, comfortable bed, cute common space, and the kitchen was very well equipped. The bar area is a big plus — we met people from all over Europe there. Live music on Thursday was a highlight.
