Dolfijn Hostel
Quiet 300-year-old townhouse, owner-run, breakfast included two minutes from Het Steen
Dolfijn Hostel is a tiny family-run place in a 300-year-old stone townhouse on Mutsaardstraat, five minutes walk from Grote Markt and two minutes from the Scheldt-side Het Steen castle. 175 Booking reviews at 7.4, dorms from around €28 with a buffet breakfast actually served each morning by the owner.
Dolfijn Hostel sits on Mutsaardstraat 14, a narrow pedestrian-friendly lane in the Historisch Centrum that most visitors never set foot on even though it runs parallel to the tourist spine from Grote Markt to Het Steen. The building is a three-storey Flemish stone townhouse dated to the early 1700s, recently renovated but still showing original timber beams, with six rooms across two upper floors and a ground-floor breakfast/common area that fits maybe eight people.
That smallness is the whole point. The hostel is run directly by Daphne — she's at reception, serves the breakfast, and knows every guest by name by the end of day one. Shared kitchenette, dining area, coffee machine, microwave, and a tiny reading corner. No bar, no evening events, no social team. If you want a hostel party scene, go to The ASH across the river; if you want to actually sleep, meet genuine locals, and hear where to get moules-frites that isn't a chain, this is it.
Rooms are a mix: a 4-bed mixed dorm, a female-only dorm, and two small private doubles. Beds are full-size (not bunks in most), linen is included, and the duvets are notably thicker than the hostel standard — guests mention the pillows matching what they have at home. Each bed gets a small locker and individual reading lamp. Bathrooms are shared on each floor, renovated, hot water reliable.
Breakfast is served 7:30–10:00 in the downstairs room: brown bread with Belgian butter, Gouda, local ham, boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, muesli, fresh coffee and strong black tea. Not buffet-factory food — the plate is assembled in front of you and replenished from the kitchen. For €28 a night including this, there is no better deal at a hostel price point in Antwerp Centrum.
The building's age brings two small trade-offs: no lift (stairs are narrow and steep), and the front rooms catch occasional early-morning traffic from Mutsaardstraat being an unloading lane for nearby cafes. Ask for a rear-facing bed if you sleep light. Cancellation policy is strict — pre-payment on booking, no refunds after 48 hours — and children are not allowed (confirmed adults-only hostel).
