The ASH

The ASH occupies a converted office block on Italiëlei 237, the north-south arterial road that runs from Antwerpen-Centraal toward Het Eilandje and the MAS museum. The hostel is a 10-minute walk from Centraal (or one stop on tram 10/11), 5 minutes from the MAS rooftop, and 8 minutes from Grote Markt in the other direction — centrally positioned but on a real Antwerp street rather than the tourist spine. The building is purpose-converted: five floors, lift, soundproofed rooms, carpeted corridors.

The pitch is social-but-not-chaos. Ground floor has a proper Bar (same name as the hostel, open to non-guests), a private garden with outdoor furniture, a large shared kitchen with enough induction hobs that it actually gets used, a games room with pool table and board games, and a library/reading room that stays quiet by mutual agreement. Upstairs, the dorms and private rooms feature a detail rare in Antwerp hostels: each room has its own private bathroom with two showers and two toilets, not a corridor-shared setup. That means you sleep in a 6-bed dorm without queueing for the shower at 8:15 AM.

Dorms run 4, 6, and 8-bed, all mixed or female-only on request. Privates are doubles and twins, with a handful of family rooms (capacity 4, own bathroom, fridge). Beds are bunk-style in the larger dorms, with individual lockers, reading lamps, USB ports, and curtains. The 5,359 review count is the hostel's biggest asset — it's been operating long enough that staff training is solid, Chris (the manager) is mentioned by name in dozens of reviews, and the cleaning team is daily rather than every-other-day.

The bar runs happy hour 17:00–19:00 every day (Belgian beers €3, cocktails €6) and evening entertainment Wed–Sat: movie nights Tuesdays, free walking-tour departures 10:30 AM Wed/Fri/Sun, board games tournaments on rainy days. Breakfast is not included but available at the bar for €6 — it's more continental than Dolfijn's family-run spread. Bike rental on-site at €12/day, cheaper than the city scheme for multi-day use.

The trade-off for the size is that the ASH is a machine rather than a family affair: you won't have a deep relationship with reception by day three. Some reviews mention bunk beds built too close together (short sitters hit their heads), which is a fair warning — ask for a bottom bunk if you're tall. The Italiëlei location is practical but not atmospheric; it's a transit road, not a cobbled lane. For the social scene, the private bathrooms, and the sheer value at €32, it's the clear first pick for solo travelers who want to meet people in Antwerp.
