Are there sandy beaches in Rijeka?

Not really. The Kvarner coast around Rijeka is rock and pebble entry. For sand you'd go to Krk Island (45 min by bus) or further down to the Kvarner islands. Within Rijeka, Sablićevo and Ploče are pebble; the swim platform near Hostel Fun is concrete.

“I stayed at Hostel Fun for three nights and swam from the platform fifty metres east of the door at 07:00 every morning. Two of those days I walked the Lungomare twenty minutes east to Sablićevo for a longer swim, then back for breakfast at Hostel Dharma's restaurant (they let non-guests in). The Adriatic in late June was 22°C, the rocks were warm by 09:00, and the only crowd was around 11:00 when the Korzo families showed up.”
