Chillout Hostel Zagreb
250 beds, rooftop terrace, 90 seconds from Ban Jelačić: Zagreb's volume-social hostel
Large central hostel at Ilica 16, 90 seconds west of Ban Jelačić Square. 250 beds across seven floors, on-site restaurant and bar, rooftop terrace on floor 7 with Ilica-Cathedral views, nightly pub-crawl meetup at 9 pm. The most social-volume hostel in central Zagreb.
Chillout Hostel at Ilica 16 is the largest hostel in central Zagreb by a distance — 250 beds across seven floors in a converted 1930s commercial building, 90 seconds on foot from Ban Jelačić Square and the top of Tkalčićeva. The ground floor has a full-service restaurant serving traditional Croatian dishes (pašticada, sarma, štrukli) and a bar open until 1 am; floor 7 is the rooftop terrace, the social centre of the building in summer.
Rooms go from 8-bed to 4-bed dorms, twin privates, and double privates. Every bed has a privacy curtain (a rarity among the €25 set in Zagreb), a reading light, two USB sockets and a small shelf. Mixed dorms dominate; there are two female-only 6-bed dorms on floor 4, and the private rooms cluster on floor 6 for the quieter side of the building. Air conditioning is reliable (this matters in Zagreb Julys, which push 35 °C), and the shared kitchen on floor 2 is the real working kitchen — four burners, oven, two fridges, a dishwasher.
The rooftop on floor 7 is what pushes the social rating. Open from 5 pm to midnight in summer, DJ on Fridays and Saturdays, a small bar with €3 Ožujsko and €5 cocktails, and a view over the Ilica tram line to the Cathedral and Medvednica mountain behind. The nightly hostel pub crawl meets on the rooftop at 9 pm and walks down to Tkalčićeva — Craft Room, Tolkien's House, Kolding, ending at Aquarius or Mochvara depending on the night of the week.
Reviewers consistently flag three things: the rooftop is genuinely the best terrace in any Zagreb hostel; the tram line outside is loud on floors 1 and 2 until midnight (avoid those dorms if you sleep light); and the shared kitchen at 7 pm can hit a 15-person queue. The staff are well-organized and the in-house pub crawl is the most-structured social in the city. It's not boutique — it's the Zagreb version of a Generator-style volume hostel.

“Very helpful staff prior to arrival. The rooftop is the standout — that view at sunset over the cathedral is worth the booking alone.”
“The staff were very friendly. They changed my room because there were not enough power outlets. The tram noise is real on floor 1 but the rooftop pub crawl is the best social in the city.”
“Nice hang out in the bar. The dorm dividers are only half-walls — no privacy curtains would be a dealbreaker elsewhere but these are properly done.”
