Auberge de Jeunesse HI Lille
The HI standard in working-class Fives — cheap, sociable, and a metro ride from the Grand Place
Hostelling International's outpost in the Fives neighborhood, 12 minutes by metro from Place du Général de Gaulle. The cheapest beds in Lille, a sun terrace with bar, evening entertainment, and a shared kitchen — exactly what you'd expect from an HI property, no surprises and no pretension.
If you've stayed at any Hostelling International property in France, you know the formula: institutional but reliable, clean dorms, a bar, evening entertainment, and prices that beat anything else in town. HI Lille delivers that formula in Fives, a former industrial neighborhood east of the centre. Boulevard Paul Painlevé puts you on the metro yellow line, 12 minutes from Place du Général de Gaulle and 8 minutes from Lille-Flandres station.
The building has the standard HI feel: large, functional, with elevators, 24-hour reception, and key card access. The sun terrace and garden out back are where everyone gathers in summer — beer in hand, watching the staff fire up the barbecue. Walking tours, broadcast football matches, occasional bowling and pool table tournaments fill out the evening entertainment programme.
Dorms range from 4 to 8 beds, all with hypoallergenic bedding and walk-in showers in shared bathrooms. Family rooms with private bathrooms exist if you're traveling with kids. The shared kitchen has decent equipment — enough for cooking pasta and basics, not for full meals. Continental breakfast is offered at extra cost.
Fives itself is rough around the edges but quietly cool. The Stade Pierre-Mauroy is a 15-minute walk; cheap kebab and Maghrebi food line rue Pierre Legrand. It's not Vieux-Lille pretty, but it's authentic Lille and you save €10 a night versus staying in the centre.

“The staff was amazing and super helpful. Laure was awesome, always very welcoming and gave the best recommendations for restaurants and Lille's must-sees. The hostel itself is clean, well-organized and in a quiet neighborhood.”
“Staff was kind and helped me check in when I arrived at 3 AM. The room was clean, shower and toilets too. Easy metro access to the centre, and a grocery store right next door for breakfast supplies.”
“Strategic location for the price, cozy, spacious dorms, and a lot of toilets which always matters. No complaints. Took the metro into town easily for the Grand Place and Vieux-Lille.”
