Hostel kangaroo-stop
Small 7-room Inner Neustadt hostel with roof terrace and Elbe views — 10 min from the bar strip, 5 min from the river
Hostel kangaroo-stop is a small, personal 7-room hostel between Albertplatz and the Elbe in Inner Neustadt — quieter than the Outer Neustadt bar hostels but with the nightlife a 10-min walk away. 8.7 rating from 169 reviews, beds from €28. Roof terrace with Elbe view, no on-site bar, and the receptionist who actually tells you where to go in Dresden.
Hostel kangaroo-stop is the small-scale alternative to the Louisenstrasse cluster. Inner Neustadt, on Erna-Berger-Strasse between Albertplatz and the Elbe, in a restored 1890s building with the kind of deep-set windows and arched doorways that only survived because Inner Neustadt got fewer bombs than Altstadt. Seven rooms total, 23 beds — barely a hostel by number, more like a guest house that runs dorms.
The roof terrace is the signature feature. Access from the 3rd floor, small but genuine — two benches, some potted plants, and a view north-east across the rooftops to the Elbe and (on clear days) the Ministry of Finance dome on the south bank. Guests use it morning and evening, and in summer the owners set out tea lights. No bar, no service — you bring your own drink up from the kitchen.
The shared kitchen is on the ground floor — full-size fridge, two-hob stove, pots, pans, kettle, toaster. Edeka supermarket 3 min walk on Bautzner Strasse. No breakfast served — the owner decided it wasn't worth the overhead for 7 rooms. There's a cafe-patisserie called Kaffee Albert across the square where a coffee and Eierschecke runs €5.50.
The owner is on-site most days and is genuinely the best reception you'll get in Dresden for non-chain insider tips. 'What should I do Thursday evening?' becomes a 15-minute conversation covering which venue has the acoustic night, what the weather's doing, which tram to take. That personal service is the reason this place punches well above its 169-review count in rating. The trade-off: no social programme — Lollis is the hostel for that. No on-site bar — Mondpalast is that. What you get is a quiet, well-kept, small hostel run by someone who cares.

“Everything was clean, and Liane at reception was awesome. She told me about the Saxon Switzerland day trip and how to get there — saved me a whole day of research. The roof terrace is a hidden gem.”
“The receptionist is so nice and told me exactly where I should go in Dresden. Small hostel feel, very clean, and the roof terrace in the evening with the Elbe view was the unexpected highlight.”
“A beautiful building rich in history and in a great location. We came for the Christmas market and were met by a great atmosphere. Far enough from the bar strip that we slept, close enough to walk there.”
