§ 01 — Summary

Hostel Lollis Homestay is the artist-collective soul of Dresden Neustadt — a 40-bed hostel on Görlitzer Strasse, one block from Kunsthofpassage, run by volunteers and long-stay staff who organise walking tours, paint the hallways, and host pub crawls. 8.6 rating from 1,999 reviews. Beds from €23. Not a hotel — a home that happens to charge by the night.

§ 02 — The full story

Hostel Lollis Homestay has been on Görlitzer Strasse since the late 1990s, back when Outer Neustadt was still recovering from East German housing policy and buildings were cheap because nobody wanted them. The current owners took over a run-down Altbau and never stopped renovating — every few months some wall gets repainted, a new common room feature appears, a library gets installed. The permanent staff is small; the majority of the team is long-stay volunteers (Workaway, HelpX, and the hostel's own programme) who work 20 hours a week in exchange for a bed. They're the reason this place feels like a home.

The building holds 40 beds — 6-bed, 8-bed, and 4-bed dorms, plus a handful of private rooms. Hallways have floor-to-ceiling murals painted by guests over the years (sign your name in the common room and you get a brush). The shared kitchen has two hobs, a full fridge, and the spice rack is a small ecosystem of half-used curry powders left by previous cooks. Free tea and coffee 24/7 — not instant, proper loose-leaf and filter. Breakfast (€5) is basic: bread, jam, cereal.

The social programme is the reason to book here. Free walking tours of Dresden Altstadt depart Monday-Friday at 10:30, led by a rotating volunteer guide who is usually a history student from TU Dresden. Pub crawls run Thursday-Saturday at 21:00 — four bars along Louisenstrasse and Alaunstrasse, shot included at each, €12 (free for Lollis guests). Movie nights in the common room on Sundays. Occasional live acoustic sets by visiting musicians.

The downsides: rooms are not soundproofed — this is a working hostel with people living the social programme, not a place for early sleepers. The hostel bar (more of a common room with a tap) shuts at 01:00 and the Louisenstrasse bar noise carries. If you need 22:00 silence, DJH Jugendgästehaus is 15 min tram away. If you want to arrive solo on a Tuesday and have five new friends by Thursday, Lollis is the Dresden answer.

§ 06 — What travelers say
Canada10.0

Located in a really lively neighborhood in Dresden and the volunteers and staff at the hostel organize a lot of activities. Free walking tour was the best I've ever done. Made friends my first night at the pub crawl.

The overall atmosphere was exceptional and the facilities were very clean while still being shared. This place is genuinely a home not a hostel. Workaways remembered my name on day two.

Very nicely decorated hallways and rooms, free coffee and tea, after calling them it was no problem to arrive after 23:00. The volunteer on night shift even heated me some soup.
