Best Hostels for Live Music in Dresden

Dresden's live-music scene lives in Neustadt — the Blue Note jazz club, Katy's Garage rock nights, Groove Station indie, and a dozen bars that host acoustic sets from Thursday onward. Three hostels put live music at the centre of their programme: Mondpalast has a cellar stage booking local bands Thursdays and Saturdays, Lollis Homestay hosts occasional acoustic sessions from visiting musicians, and DJH Jugendherberge Dresden runs summer Friday DJ and acoustic acts in the courtyard. Book any of these for a Dresden week and you'll hear four or five sets without paying a cover.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I've seen six different bands at Mondpalast's cellar across two Dresden trips, and the hit rate was maybe 4/6 — two were local heroes I'll remember, one was perfectly fine beer-soaked bar rock, one was an experimental electronic set I walked out of after 15 minutes. The Dresden music scene is self-curating through these small rooms, and when it's good, it's very good. Lollis's acoustic night was the most memorable musical moment of any hostel stay I've had — a Brazilian workawayer on guitar and an Italian visiting musician on cajón, 11pm in the common room, 15 of us on velvet sofas drinking the hostel's free tea. DJH's courtyard Friday with a Dresden indie duo playing ABBA covers was an unexpected charm.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Live Music in Dresden

Tip Nº 01

Mondpalast cellar shows are Thursdays and Saturdays 21:00, doors from 20:30. Arrive 15 min early for a seat at the front bar — the back of the cellar has terrible sightlines.

Tip Nº 02

Free entry for hostel guests (show room key at the door). Non-guests pay €5. Drinks half-price during the set, regular price after.

Tip Nº 03

DJH summer Friday programme schedule is on the hostel's lobby noticeboard by Wednesday each week. Free for guests, €5 for non-guests, starts 20:00.

Tip Nº 04

For venues beyond the hostels: Blue Note (jazz, Wed acoustic free), Katy's Garage (rock + punk, Fri/Sat), Groove Station (indie, Wed + Sat), Scheune (alt/punk, Wed) are all on or near Alaunstrasse, 3-8 min walk from Mondpalast and Lollis.
