Jugendherberge Nürnberg
The DJH youth hostel inside the Imperial Castle, opposite Albrecht Dürer's house, with a 8.9 rating across 1,887 reviews.
Set inside the Kaiserstallung wing of Nuremberg's Imperial Castle, this is the city's most architecturally striking hostel. The medieval setting comes with DJH membership requirements (€7 day card on arrival if you don't already have one) and a buffet breakfast that reviewers consistently praise.
There is no other hostel like it in Germany. The Jugendherberge Nürnberg occupies the Kaiserstallung, a 16th-century imperial granary tucked against the Kaiserburg's outer wall, and you check in to a stone-vaulted reception inside the castle complex itself. The Sinwell tower is two minutes' walk; Albrecht Dürer's house is on the same Tiergärtnertorplatz square downstairs.
It is part of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH). Non-members are welcome, but you will be sold a day membership at check-in (€7 in 2026) or an annual card if you plan to use other DJH hostels. Mention this when booking — some travelers are caught off guard.
For the price (around €38 a dorm bed, breakfast included) you get a buffet breakfast that punches well above its category — fruit-flavored yogurts, cheeses, cold cuts, fresh bread, a real cappuccino machine — plus an in-house restaurant for dinner if you don't want to walk back down into the Altstadt at the end of the day.
The walk down to the Hauptmarkt is six minutes through cobbled medieval streets that thin out by 21:00, when day-trip buses leave. After hours you have the castle area almost to yourself. The Burg-side stretch of the city wall, lit at night, is the city's quietest sundowner spot.
- 01Sleeping inside an imperial castle is not normal hostel territory — this is genuinely a one-of-one location
- 02The breakfast spread is the best of any hostel in Nuremberg, full stop, and it is included in the rate
- 03After the day-trippers leave at 21:00 you have the Burg quarter almost to yourself
- 04Tiergärtnertorplatz, the Dürer-house square, is right at the front door for the city's iconic sunset photo
- 05The DJH model means it runs like clockwork: clean linen, locked floors, no chaos
- Inside the Kaiserburg complex — two minutes to the Sinwell tower
- 8.9 / 10 across 1,887 reviews; breakfast praised in dozens
- Stone-vaulted medieval architecture in the Kaiserstallung
- Buffet breakfast included; in-house restaurant for dinner
“The location was phenomenal! Right next to the Imperial Castle, and easily walkable to the Hauptmarkt. Breakfast was a real buffet, not the usual hostel afterthought.”
“This is an amazing historical castle with modern facilities inside. Comfortable, clean, exceptional in every way. We did the Sinwell tower and were back at the room in five minutes.”
“Great place in a beautiful, historical location. Very clean; helpful and friendly staff and a real cappuccino machine at breakfast. The DJH card fee at check-in was a small surprise.”
