The mainstream backpacker base for Chania: small pool, big communal kitchen, five minutes from the bus station that takes you to the Samaria trailhead.

§ 01 — Summary

Cocoon City Hostel is the largest of Chania's four hostels and the social-hub default for backpackers passing through Crete. Set on Kydonias Avenue near the KTEL bus station, it's the practical pick if you're using Chania as the launchpad for Samaria, Balos and Elafonissi day trips.

§ 02 — The full story

Cocoon sits ten minutes' walk south of the Old Town, on the wide Kydonias Avenue right by the KTEL bus station — meaning you roll out of bed and onto the 06:15 Omalos bus for the Samaria Gorge with no taxi needed. Trade-off: the building itself is on a busy road, not a Venetian alley. Inside, the layout is hostel-by-design rather than converted-house: dorms with bed-card key locks, in-bed power outlets, individual reading lights, and the storage drawer under each bed that fits a 50L pack.

The small pool and surrounding seating area are the headline social space. It's not a pool party in the Croatian sense — more a place where solo travellers settle in for an afternoon, drink something from the bar, and end up trading day-trip plans with whoever else is poolside. The kitchen is properly equipped (multiple hobs, full fridge, plates and pans), which matters in Chania where eating out adds up fast in season.

The staff are the recurring praise point in reviews — Chira and the reception team get name-checked for going above and beyond on luggage, late check-in, day-trip booking and Samaria logistics. This is also where Cocoon beats the smaller hostels: there's a real desk, real opening hours, real local advice on tap.

Quiet hours after 23:00 are enforced and there are no organised parties — so couples and solos who want sleep get it, while the social bunch hang in the bar or pool area until late.

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01Practical layout — purpose-built dorms with the small comforts solo travellers actually use
  • 02The pool isn't fancy but it works as a social anchor without the party-hostel chaos
  • 03Reception is staffed real hours and the team genuinely knows the day-trip logistics
  • 04Bus-station adjacency means zero taxi cost for the early Samaria departure
  • 05Quiet-hours rule is enforced — you can socialise OR sleep, your call

Cheap but a very good hostel, has very big communal areas to socialise and make new friends, a small pool with seating area around, a large kitchen with cooking facilities and storage. Good shower and clean toilets.

I'm 52 now, I've been staying in hostels 30+ years and this is the best hostel I've ever stayed at. Rooms are big and clean, multiple washrooms and kitchens, staff very helpful, plus it's 5 min walk from the bus station.

The drawer beneath the bed is excellent — you can even fit your suitcase. The reception staff are very good. Chira was patient with my questions and a problem in the room.
