§ 01 — Summary

Chania Hostel Youth 18-50 is the small, owner-run hostel in the leafy Halepa neighbourhood east of the Old Town. The garden — full of cats, hammocks and seating — is the universal review highlight, and Kostas the owner is named in nearly every review for his hospitality.

§ 02 — The full story

Halepa is the residential coastal neighbourhood east of the Old Town — the kind of area where Cretans actually live, with cheap tavernas, no rolling-bag tourists and a walking path along the sea straight to the Venetian harbour (about 25 minutes on foot, with the Aegean on your right the whole way). The hostel sits on Eleftheriou Venizelou, a side street off the main coastal road.

The building is older — the kind of converted Cretan house with high-ceilinged rooms, original tile floors, and the slight creaks of a property that's been hosting travellers for years rather than weeks. The headline space is the back garden: olive trees, hammocks slung between them, a long wooden table for breakfast and beers, plenty of seating, and resident cats that have made the property their own. This is where guests spend evenings — not in a sterile lobby.

Kostas is the reason this hostel sits at 9.4 with under 700 reviews. He runs reception, takes the time to draw you the route to the gorge bus station, recommends the right beach for the day's wind direction, and has the local taverna phone numbers in his head. Reviews from Germany, the UK, Slovakia, Poland and the Netherlands all name-check him personally.

The hostel is mid-size — under 30 beds across two dorms and a couple of private doubles. Bathrooms are renovated and shared room-by-room (you share with your dorm-mates only, not the whole floor). There's no party scene; the energy is conversation in the garden until midnight, then quiet.

Very cozy place with a nice garden to come down after a hustly day in the city or elsewhere. I liked the area, because it's a bit outside of the centre, in a more residential area. With a nice walk next to the sea you can reach the centre easily. Kostas is very cordial and welcoming.

Very good location and people in the hostel. One of the best hostels I've ever been to. Kostas is really a good guy, helped me and gave good advice. I met nice people there. If I come to Chania again, this hostel will be my choice.

Kostas is an excellent host who was very friendly and helpful during my stay. The garden (with the cats!) drew me in and I had a lovely time sitting in the hammocks talking with other guests and reading.
