Best Rooftop-Bar Hostels in Galway

Galway is not a rooftop city by Mediterranean standards — the weather doesn't reliably support open-air terrace culture, and most hostels are Georgian townhouses with no usable roof. But two of the six viable Galway hostels have solved the outdoor-drinking problem differently: The Nest Boutique Hostel built a third-floor rooftop terrace with teak picnic benches and a partial sea-view in Salthill, and The Dawson Hostel put a proper ground-floor outdoor terrace with picnic benches and partial rain cover at its Woodquay property. Neither has a licensed bar on the terrace — both are BYOB — but they are the only two Galway hostels where 'let's take these upstairs' is actually an option.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I've done Galway in both July and November and the terrace question is really a summer question — June through August, both The Nest rooftop and Dawson's ground-floor terrace are full from 19:00 to 21:30, and it's the part of the day that defines whether your Galway trip felt like 'a proper Irish holiday' or 'a wet weekend away'. The Nest rooftop in July, picnic benches + six other backpackers + BYOB beers + the Galway Bay line between the buildings at sunset — that's the postcard. Dawson's ground-floor terrace in July — picnic benches + 15-20 people from the 100-bed hostel + a more social-density scene, less view but more energy. In November, only Dawson's covered terrace is usable; The Nest's rooftop is empty. Pick by season and by whether you want view or density.

Quieter than the Eyre Square hostels and closer to the sea.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Rooftop Bar in Galway

Tip Nº 01

Both terraces are BYOB. Buy beer at McCambridge's on Shop Street (€10 for four craft cans) before 22:00, at the Londis on Salthill Prom until 23:00 (convenience pricing), or at O'Connor's off-licence near the Crane Bar in the West End (best Irish craft selection).

Tip Nº 02

Sunset from The Nest rooftop is approximately 21:30 in June, 21:00 in July, 20:15 in August. By October it's dark by 19:00 and the rooftop is a wind tunnel — it closes at 22:00 but in winter nobody uses it after 18:00.

Tip Nº 03

The Nest has only 30 beds total, so the rooftop rarely gets crowded. If you're a couple looking for privacy at sunset, book a 7:30pm arrival time — the terrace is yours between check-in social lull and the 9pm group that climbs up after dinner.

Tip Nº 04

Dawson's terrace is the only Galway hostel terrace with partial rain cover, so it's the option for Irish weather. July-August has maybe 40% rain days in Galway — having that cover is the difference between 'we sat out tonight' and 'we drank inside'.

Tip Nº 05

Neither terrace has licensed bar service, so there's no cash bar to fall back on. Rooftop is closed for staff cleaning between 22:00 and 10:00, no late-night terrace access.
