Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Bohoostel is the correct pick if your Bologna budget is under โฌ60/day total โ the โฌ22 dorm and the free-pasta kitchen cut your daily spend to โฌ35โ40, and you're still walking to Pratello aperitivo for โฌ6 spritzes at 19:00. Compared to Ostello Bello, you lose the free aperitivo buffet and the 5-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore; what you get is โฌ10/night saved and a noticeably quieter sleep. First-time Bologna visitors pick Ostello Bello. Return visitors or 5+ night stays pick Bohoostel.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Take bus 14 or 20 from Piazza dei Martiri (3 min walk from the hostel) to Piazza Maggiore โ it's โฌ1.50 and saves 12 minutes each way versus walking.
- 2The Coop supermarket on Via San Felice is 3 minutes away and closes at 21:00 โ hit it before aperitivo if you want to cook breakfast the next day.
- 3Pratello's best pre-dinner spritz is at Osteria del Sole (โฌ5), 6 minutes from the hostel; skip the piazza-side bars charging โฌ10 for the same drink.
- 4The top-floor 4-bed dorm has the best morning light but no curtains on top bunks โ request bed 1 or 2 if you value darkness over window views.

Privates with ensuite bathrooms from โฌ55 โ โฌ10 below Centro Storico equivalents
Quiet west-side street, no scooter noise, easy on light sleepers
๐ The Full Story
Bohoostel is the mid-range west-side hostel of Bologna โ 23 Via Camillo Casarini, in the residential pocket between Porta San Felice and the Parco della Montagnola. You walk 4 minutes to Via del Pratello, the best-value aperitivo strip in the city, and 18 minutes (or a 6-minute bus ride on the 14 or 20) to Piazza Maggiore. What you trade in location you get back in price: dorms from โฌ22 and private ensuites from โฌ55, โฌ10โ15 cheaper than anything equivalent in Centro Storico.
The building is a converted 19th-century apartment block with a central inner courtyard that stays bright all day. Staff keep a small herb garden, outdoor tables are set up from April to October, and the courtyard doubles as the breakfast room until 10:30. Dorms are 4 and 6-bed with metal bunks, reading lights, privacy curtains on bottom bunks only (not top), and โฌ0.50 locker coin-boxes under each bed. Private rooms are proper small doubles with ensuite bathrooms โ not boutique but cleaner than most Centro Storico privates at the same price.
The common kitchen has induction hobs, a decent-sized fridge, and a pantry with free pasta, salt, olive oil, coffee, and tea. It's the cheapest way to eat in Bologna if you're stretching a budget โ shop the Mercato delle Erbe (12 min walk) or the Coop on Via San Felice (3 min) and cook. No in-house bar, but the living room has a small beer-and-wine self-serve honour bar (โฌ3 tokens).
West-side Bologna is where the city is quieter, more residential, and cheaper โ it's the side locals live on. The trade-off is distance: 18 minutes on foot to Piazza Maggiore feels longer after a day walking, and the last city buses run until 00:30 only. If you want everything five minutes away, book Ostello Bello instead. If you want a โฌ22 dorm and Pratello bars in walking distance, Bohoostel wins.
