Combo Bologna
Station-adjacent social megahostel, rooftop bar, in-house Italian restaurant, 370 beds
Combo Bologna is the 370-bed Bolognina flagship of the Combo chain — 8.8 from 7,437 reviews, a converted 19th-century customs building 3 minutes from Bologna Centrale, with a rooftop bar, in-house restaurant, and the biggest social calendar in Bologna.
Combo Bologna occupies the old customs warehouse at Via De' Carracci 69/14, the Bolognina-side building you see on your right as you walk out of Bologna Centrale. The conversion kept the cast-iron columns and the double-height ceilings, turned the industrial floor plan into 370 beds across 10 floors, and installed a rooftop bar with a panoramic wrap-around terrace. It's the largest hostel in Emilia-Romagna and the most reviewed by a factor of three.
The scale is what makes Combo a different experience from Dopa or Ostello Bello. There are always people in the common areas — you can walk into the ground-floor bar at 18:00 on a random Tuesday and find a bar-crawl gathering, a Italian-class language exchange, and a board-game corner running at the same time. Staff publish a weekly events calendar: Monday bar-crawl, Tuesday pub quiz, Wednesday rooftop swing dance, Thursday language exchange, Friday DJ set, Saturday rooftop party with a guest DJ, Sunday pasta brunch. You can't NOT meet people here.
Dorms are 4, 6, and 8-bed pods with full privacy curtains, individual charging ports, reading lights, and large lockers with USB-charging inside. Private rooms include 2-person ensuites, a "social" 4-bed ensuite (private group in a dorm-style room), and a rare 6-bed ensuite for groups of friends traveling together. Bathrooms are shared between two dorms on each floor and cleaned three times a day.
The rooftop bar (floor 10) is open April to October, 18:00–01:00, and runs €6 spritz happy hour 18:00–20:00. The in-house restaurant serves €12 primi (tagliatelle al ragù, cappelletti in brodo, lasagna verde) and €16 secondi until 22:30. Breakfast (€9) is a full Italian buffet with pastries, eggs-to-order, and the good espresso machine. Most guests book this and skip Bolognina breakfast bars.
Bolognina itself is a trade-off. Three minutes to the station is unbeatable for early trains, but the neighborhood north of the tracks is working-class and rapidly gentrifying, with a mix of newer aperitivo bars and older dive spots. Piazza Maggiore is 15 minutes on foot (over the railway bridge, down Via Indipendenza) or 8 minutes by bus 25.

“370 beds means you meet new people every night. Rooftop happy hour on Friday was packed but fun. 3 min to the station is a huge win.”
“Pod bunks with full curtains and USB charging are the best I've seen at a big hostel. €12 pasta in the restaurant was genuinely good.”
“Rooftop view over Bologna at sunset is unreal. Staff run an actual events calendar, not just tokens. Breakfast worth the €9.”
