Beteyà Hostel Don Bosco
The beachfront-resort hostel where Catania ends and the lava-sand of Plaja begins
A 1,400-review beachfront hostel-meets-resort on Plaja, Catania's 5km of black volcanic sand. Nine kilometres south of the historic centre but two minutes from the airport, with its own private beach area, garden, restaurant, and a 24-hour reception. Better as a beach base than a city base.
Beteyà Hostel Don Bosco sits on the Plaja, the 5-kilometre stretch of black volcanic sand that runs south from Catania to the airport. The hostel is part of a Salesian community complex and the property reflects it: huge garden, palm trees, a private beach area you walk straight onto, sun deck, ping-pong table, and an outdoor restaurant where the tables face the water and the planes land overhead every twenty minutes.
Rooms run from twin private with private bathroom (the most-booked option, around €40 a night) up to family rooms; the dorm-style budget rooms here are simpler than the resort-y common areas suggest, but the linens are fresh and the bathrooms work. Air-con is in every room, soundproofing is OK but not extraordinary, and Wi-Fi is fast in the main building and patchy in the further rooms.
The trade-off is location. You're 9 km south of Piazza del Duomo, the historic centre, and about 8 km from the via Etnea bar circuit. The 538 bus runs from Plaja to the centre every 30 minutes, takes 25 minutes, and stops at 9pm — after that it's a €15 taxi back. If your trip is centred on city sights, aperitivo bars, and Etna day-trips, this is the wrong base. If you want beach mornings, sunset on the sand, and an easy 5-minute taxi to your CTA flight, this is one of the best beachfront hostel deals on the east coast of Sicily.
The rating (8.0 across 1,400+ reviews) holds steady because guests know what they're booking: a beach resort priced like a hostel, with a friendly staff who'll order takeaway pizza for you, organise canoes and beach umbrellas, and set up themed dinners on Friday nights in summer.
- 01The private beach area is genuinely private — you walk out the back of the hostel and you're on the sand
- 02Staff will literally order you a takeaway pizza from the local pizzeria and hand you the box at reception
- 03The African-themed décor in the common rooms gives it personality the average budget Catania hotel doesn't have
- 04The garden is huge: shaded benches, a little playground, and the planes from CTA banking overhead every 20 minutes — a strangely relaxing soundtrack
- 05If you have an early flight, this is the easiest cheap bed in the city to get to — 10 minutes to the terminal
- Private beach area on the Plaja, the 5km black-sand stretch south of Catania
- 1,400+ Booking reviews holding an 8.0 rating
- 9 km from Piazza del Duomo but 5 km (10 minutes) from Catania-Fontanarossa airport
- Garden, sun deck, restaurant, ping-pong, and a 24-hour reception
“Stranded at Palermo airport and needed a nearby room for the night. The hostel is clean and exceptionally friendly — staff were wonderful, bed was comfortable, breakfast was a simple help-yourself, and the beach is right there. They even sorted my onward bus to Catania for me.”
“24h check-in! Nice garden, good breakfast and Wi-Fi, pleasant staff. Everything was fine — I rolled in at 2am off a delayed flight and they had my room ready, no problem.”
“The hotel has its own beach (not opened in April though). I loved the African-themed décor. Staff was extremely helpful and nice — they even ordered food for me when I was too tired to go out, and dropped me at the airport.”
