§ 01 — Summary

An 8.7-rated party-and-tour hostel right on Via Etnea, two blocks from Piazza del Duomo and the La Pescheria fish market. The full social-events package: free pasta dinner at 21h, daily walking tours, happy hour, movie nights, and a rooftop terrace with Etna views on clear days.

§ 02 — The full story

Ostello degli Elefanti — named for the volcanic-stone elephant statue in Piazza del Duomo that's the city's symbol — is a converted historic palazzo on Via Etnea, the main north-south spine of Catania. The location is as central as it gets: two blocks south is Piazza del Duomo and the La Pescheria fish market, two blocks north is Piazza Stesicoro with the Roman amphitheatre, and the aperitivo bars on Via Gemmellaro start one block east.

The building is a four-storey palazzo with a wide internal courtyard, mosaic-tile entrance hall, and a rooftop terrace big enough for 30 people that genuinely catches Etna views on clear days (Nathalie from Mexico: 'Wonderful view from the rooftop terrace'). Dorms are 4-, 6-, and 8-bed configurations with privacy curtains, individual lockers, USB sockets, and reading lights. Private rooms have city views from the upper floors — Alper from Germany flagged 'rooms quite spacious for a hostel, with a view as well'.

Where Ostello degli Elefanti differentiates from the other Catania hostels is the published events programme. There's a free walking tour from the lobby every morning at 10h (English-language), a free pasta dinner every evening at 21h (real food, not just bread-and-pasta), happy hour at the rooftop bar from 19h, and movie nights two evenings a week. The hostel also runs paid Etna day-trips (€45 with transport + guide) and Taormina half-day trips. The reception books bicycle rentals and Aci Trezza day-trips on the Circumetnea train.

The party energy is real but not aggressive. The pasta-dinner-at-21h crowd is the social hub of the day; the rooftop is loudest 22h-midnight; quiet hours kick in at midnight and the building soundproofing is decent.

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01The free pasta dinner at 21h is genuinely substantial — pasta with ragù or alla Norma, not just bread sticks
  • 02The walking tour from the lobby is the single best onboarding for Catania first-timers — covers Roman, Norman, Baroque, and the lava-rebuild story in 90 minutes
  • 03Rooftop at sunset with Etna in the background is the Instagram shot every reviewer mentions (Nathalie, Alper, Shirley)
  • 04Bicycle rental at reception (€10/day) is the easy way to do the Plaja beach 8 km away
  • 05Dorm bunks have privacy curtains, USB sockets, reading lights, and lockers — small things that quietly raise the rating

Wonderful view from the rooftop terrace. Very beautiful building, good bed, good breakfast and night spaghetti. Incredible localisation — two minutes from Piazza del Duomo and the fish market.

The location is amazing, and they also have a great rooftop. Free breakfast and pasta dinner comes included with the price. The rooms are also quite spacious for a hostel, and with a view as well.

The vibe, the game room and the view. It is very central as well — we walked everywhere. Staff super friendly, and the included pasta dinner is a great way to meet other guests.
