Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
aparto Florence Manifattura is the anti-party hostel of Florence, and in a city where Ostello Bello and Plus dominate the party scene, that's a real niche. Private bathrooms in every dorm, soundproofed walls, and actual desks mean you sleep and you work โ both rare in this city at this price. The catch is Novoli: a real 15 minutes on the T2 tram to the centre, and the last tram is around 00:30, so if Santo Spirito aperitivo Thursday is your main plan you'll be walking home or paying for taxis. Pick aparto if quiet sleep, WiFi that works, and a big desk matter more than falling out of the hostel bar into the Duomo.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Book an upper-floor dorm. The ground-floor rooms face the Manifattura courtyard and catch more foot-traffic noise. Upper floors are quieter and get better light.
- 2The T2 tram runs every 5 min in the day and every 10 min in the evening, last one around 00:30. If you miss it, an Uber to Novoli from the centre is 15-20 EUR. Budget for one taxi night if your plan includes Santo Spirito late drinks.
- 3Eat inside the Manifattura compound for lunch. The on-site bar-caffรฉ is cheaper than anything in the centre and runs a 10 EUR pasta+glass-of-wine workday menu on weekdays.
- 4Bring bug spray or ask reception for a plug-in anti-mosquito. The windows don't have nets and Italian summer mosquitoes are persistent from June through September.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
En-suite bathroom in every dorm โ private, not a corridor shuffle at 7am
Soundproofed walls and full-size beds, a clear cut above the backpacker-hostel standard
Work-friendly common area: desks, sockets, space for video calls
Inside the Manifattura Tabacchi creative complex โ galleries, bar-caffรฉ, supermarket on site
15 min on tram T2 to Santa Maria Novella station, no transfer needed
๐ The Full Story
aparto Florence Manifattura occupies a wing of the Manifattura Tabacchi, the 1932 Florentine state tobacco factory that stopped producing in 2001 and reopened this decade as a mixed-use district of student housing, galleries, cafes, and coworking space. The complex is a 15-minute T2 tram ride from Santa Maria Novella station and about 25 minutes on foot from the Duomo.
Rooms are built to aparto's student-residence standard, which is a good thing: proper beds (full-width, not camp-cot bunks), lockable wardrobes, desks with reading lights, and en-suite private bathrooms in every dorm. Walls are soundproofed. Linens are provided, towels too. Air conditioning in every room.
Downstairs is a sizeable common area that fills with a mix of long-term student residents and shorter-stay dorm bookers. There's space to take a video call without a roommate in the background, which is uncommon in Florence hostels at this price. A bar-caffรฉ and supermarket sit inside the Manifattura compound itself.
The trade-off is location. Novoli is a residential district, not the historic centre โ you're on the tram for everything, and the last T2 runs around 00:30. If your Florence plan is walking from your bed to Santa Croce for aperitivo, pick a hostel in the centre. If your plan involves any actual sleep, real working hours, or a budget that doesn't tolerate centre-of-Florence premiums, aparto earns its 9.1.
