§ 01 — Summary

8.4-rated cheap-and-central backpacker hostel on Brygidki, a quiet pedestrian side street four minutes from the Long Market. 4100+ reviews, big shared kitchen, lounge with board games, family rooms and 6-bed dorms from €18. The lowest-priced authentic hostel inside the Old Town walls.

§ 02 — The full story

World Hostel is on Brygidki, a side street half a block from the Brigittine church and four minutes' walk from Neptune Fountain on the Long Market. The building is a classic Old Town tenement with a small reception on the ground floor and dorms running up three floors — no lift, so travel light if you're above the second floor. It's been operating here for over a decade, which is why the review count is north of 4,000 on Booking.

The dorm setup is old-school: 6-bed and 8-bed mixed dorms with wooden bunks, shared bathrooms in the corridor, and communal common areas that fill up by 20:00. A few four-bed family rooms with private bathrooms are bookable too. It's a budget place — you won't get reading lights in every bunk or en-suite in dorms — but at €18 in the Old Town of a major European city, that trade-off is fair.

The biggest draw is the kitchen and lounge on the second floor: proper industrial fridges, three electric hobs, a microwave, plenty of pans, and a long wooden table where guests eat together. The noticeboard lists the free walking-tour departure times (11:00 and 15:00 daily from Neptune), and there's a small honesty-bar corner where you can grab a Lech or Tyskie for 8 PLN after hours.

The downsides are the ones you expect at this price: the stairs, the shared bathrooms, dorm snorers, and a street that gets light delivery truck noise before 08:00. The upsides — Brygidki location, functional kitchen, long-running team, 4,000 reviews — are hard to match anywhere else in Gdansk at €18.

Exactly what you'd expect for the price. Clean enough, central, sociable in the kitchen in the evening. The stairs are a workout with a big backpack but worth it.

Old building in the best part of the Old Town. 6-bed dorm was simple but clean, got a good night's sleep. The honesty bar was nice touch.
