Za Murami Hostel
8.2-rated backpacker hostel at the Old Town walls — 5 min to Dlugi Targ, 4 min to St Mary's Basilica, family rooms, tour desk, 2,500 reviews
8.2-rated backpacker hostel on Za Murami — literally "Behind the Walls" — at the edge of the Old Town's defensive walls, 5 min to Dlugi Targ. 2,500+ reviews, family rooms available, tour desk, shared kitchen. The closest budget hostel to St Mary's Basilica.
Za Murami means "behind the walls" in Polish — and that's where the hostel is, pressed up against the old defensive walls of the Old Town, on a quiet side street that connects to Dluga via a medieval gate. The walk to Dlugi Targ is five minutes, to St Mary's Basilica four minutes, to Mariacka amber street three. The side-street silence combined with the walking-distance-to-everything location is the selling point.
The building is a four-floor reconstructed tenement (lift-free, you walk) with 4, 6 and 8-bed mixed dorms, two single-female dorms, and a handful of family rooms with private bathrooms. Dorms have lockers, reading lights, and shared corridor bathrooms. Private rooms get their own en-suite. Interior is no-frills: wooden bunks, painted walls, practical. Exactly what it should be for €21.
The common spaces are the ground floor: a small guest kitchen with two hobs and a microwave, a lounge with a TV and a few board games, and a cozy bar that pours local Tyskie and Lech for 8 PLN. The tour desk by reception has a whiteboard of that day's walking tours (meeting at Neptune 11:00 and 15:00) and tips for the Westerplatte boat.
Breakfast isn't included but the in-house breakfast is 22 PLN for pastries, ham, cheese, eggs, coffee — decent value. Most backpackers skip it and walk three minutes to Bar Mleczny Neptun on Dluga. Za Murami is not flashy, it's not curated — it's a plain, well-priced, well-located hostel with 2,500 reviews behind it. Think of it as the quiet, cheaper cousin of Trip & Hostel.
