Hostel Umed
13th-floor hospital hostel run by the medical university — 9.4/10 from 526 reviews, panoramic city views, dirt-cheap, the most surreal cheap stay in Poland
Hostel Umed sits on the 13th floor of a hospital on the Łódź Medical University (UMed) campus in Widzew, east Łódź. 526 reviews at a remarkable 9.4 average — the highest of any hostel on Hostelpedia for Łódź. Yes, it's literally a hospital. No, you do not hear ambulances, as Polish reviewer Michal confirmed.
Hostel Umed is the strangest, best-rated, and probably most unique cheap stay in Poland. The full address is Pomorska 251, entrance A, 13th floor (drive-in from ul. Czechosłowacka). It's literally on a hospital floor, run by Uniwersytet Medyczny w Łodzi (UMed) — the medical university — primarily as student accommodation, with public hostel rooms slotted in. Polish reviewer Michal's 2024 verdict is the canonical line: 'It's a Hotel at the 13th floor of a hospital. I was surprised, did not hear any ambulances, and did not encounter any ghosts.'
The physical product is sterile-clean (it's a hospital — they have standards) and surprisingly modern. Every room has en-suite bathroom (rare at this price), AC, work desk, wardrobe, dining area, a flat-screen TV, and a window looking 13 stories down at Widzew. The shared kitchen is fully equipped and frequently praised — this is the rare hostel kitchen with stove pots, spices, and dishwashing liquid actually present. Free Wi-Fi, elevator (yes — 13 floors, and Polish reviewer Filip warns it's slow), 24-hour security at the building entrance, accessible rooms for disabled travelers (rare in Polish hostels — this is a hospital), and even an EV charging station in the parking lot.
The trade-offs are geographic and signage. Łódź's central Piotrkowska is 6km west — a 4 zł tram ride, 25 minutes door-to-door, but at 1 am the night-bus is rare and an Uber from Piotrkowska runs 25-35 zł. The hospital signage is medical, not hostel — multiple reviewers (including Polish Weronika in April 2026) noted the building is hard to find for first-time visitors. Use the Booking app's map. Beds are narrow singles (Iwona's specific note), and one Polish reviewer reported a faulty microwave.
For the price (€15) and the rating (9.4 from 526) and the absolutely unique angle — it's a STORY for any backpacker, and Erasmus students at UMed know it well — this is Łódź's hidden hostel-tourism asset.

“Super clean and comfortable. Lovely hot shower. Very secure. Only downside was that it was a long way to walk to the centre of town or any shops, so plan for the tram.”
“It's a hostel on the 13th floor of a hospital. I was surprised — did not hear any ambulances, and did not encounter any ghosts. Highly recommend if you need to stay in this part of the city. The microwave was faulty during my stay.”
“Very clean and tidy. Equipped with everything needed. The fact that it is located in a hospital is the only catch, but with all the plusses this can be neglected.”
