Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Rivoli is the best all-rounder in central Porto. The cinema theme could have been a gimmick but the execution is considered — the rooms actually look different, the rooftop screenings actually happen (not just listed as 'activities' and never delivered), and the buffet breakfast is genuinely restaurant-quality. What holds it back from a 9.4 is the shared-bathroom layout (Gallery Hostel has en-suites at a similar price), and on weekends the Aliados side rooms catch bar-crawl noise until 01:00 — ask for a rear-facing room if you're light-sleeping. Tip: the Wes Anderson room on the third floor is the one to request by name at booking (or email ahead) — it's the largest 4-bed dorm and the balcony gets afternoon sun with a clear view of the Torre dos Clérigos.
🎯 Insider Tips
- 1Request the Wes Anderson room at booking — largest 4-bed dorm, balcony view of Torre dos Clérigos.
- 2Breakfast runs 08:00 to 10:30. Eggs are cooked on request at the counter — don't just take the pastries, ask.
- 3Rooftop movie nights kick off 21:30 in summer. The BBQ runs 19:30 twice a week, free for guests who sign up at reception.
- 4If you're here on a Friday, skip the in-hostel bar crawl and walk 8 min to Rua Galeria de Paris — that's where the student scene actually is.

📖 The Full Story
Rivoli Cinema Hostel occupies a 1930s Art Deco building on Rua Dr. Magalhães Lemos, two blocks off Avenida dos Aliados (Porto's central civic boulevard). The theme isn't a gimmick: every room is individually designed around a film — Hitchcock in one, Wes Anderson in another, Almodóvar in the female dorm — and the communal spaces have vintage projectors, movie posters, and a small lending library of DVDs.
The location is the reason 3,400 reviewers give it a 9.0. You're 3 minutes from São Bento train station, 5 from Torre dos Clérigos, 10 from Ribeira. The metro (line D, yellow) is on your doorstep, the Linha do Douro to Régua leaves from São Bento, and the airport metro terminates at Trindade (one stop north).
The buffet breakfast is legitimately good: fresh pastries from the bakery next door, eggs cooked on request, Portuguese cheeses, charcuterie, a jug of freshly-squeezed orange juice. It's included in the rate. The rooftop has outdoor furniture, a sun deck, BBQ facilities, landmark views over the Torre dos Clérigos, and a projector screen that plays films from 21:30 most nights in summer.
Dorms have shared bathrooms (no en-suite here), but the bunks have privacy curtains and reading lights, lockers are generous, and the double-glazed windows keep Aliados noise out.
