Patio Hostel
The garden-hostel giant — big kitchen, 40-seat courtyard bar, and the review-volume champion of Bratislava
Patio is the giant of Bratislava hostels — 5,551 reviews at 7.9, located on Špitálska just outside the Old Town perimeter. The USP is the garden: a proper outdoor courtyard with seating for 40, a bar, and the only hostel in the city where you can drink a beer under a walnut tree. Quieter than Old Town hostels, bigger, with a huge kitchen, laundry room, and 24-hour reception.
Patio Hostel occupies a restored Habsburg-era townhouse on Špitálska 35, about 10 minutes walking from Michalská Gate and 8 minutes from the main square. The defining feature is the namesake patio — a proper inner garden with walnut trees, picnic benches, an outdoor bar, and capacity for 40+ drinkers. In summer it's the single best outdoor hostel space in Bratislava; in winter it's still usable with heaters and an enclosed section. No rooftop bar in the strict sense, but the patio fills the same role.
The hostel is big — 150+ beds across multiple floors — and that scale enables amenities the smaller Elephants and Schöndorf can't match: a laundry room with multiple washer-dryer units, a genuinely huge shared kitchen (six burners, three fridges, 20 seats at the communal table), indoor smoking room (rare in modern Europe), free private parking, a bar with live-sports broadcasts, and 24-hour reception. The trade-off is the energy: Patio's large population dilutes the social cohesion, and it reads as a boarding house with amenities rather than a tight-knit backpacker pack.
Location is the weakest point. Špitálska 35 is on the edge of the tourist Old Town — walkable to Michalská Gate in 10 minutes, but not 'walk home from the bar crawl at 3am' adjacent. Most Old Town walking tours start at the main square, which means adding that 10-minute walk each day. On the flip side, you're a 12-minute walk to Hlavná stanica (cheaper than Uber to the station for bus connections to Vienna), and the tram network is at your door.
Fit test: longer stays (4+ nights), budget-conscious travelers who want to cook, groups who need the garden for hang time, drivers who need free parking. Not the pick if you want dorm-friends-by-midnight or the shortest walk to the Pub Crawl meetup — Patio is distinctly mellow.

“Really cozy. So many facilities: nice common room, indoor smoking room, garden, bar, laundry room and baggage room. Not really a social hostel but it is beautiful. The garden especially made me sit outside with a beer and read an entire book.”
“Excellent welcome in a super convenient location, right in the center, close to the large Tesco supermarket and all services — restaurants, tram stops, post office. It is quiet, perfect for sleeping and for working from the garden during the day.”
“Excellent location, beautiful property, electrifying environment. The activities and kitchen facilities were the best I have seen across Central Europe — cooked pasta for eight of us in the kitchen and had room to spare.”
